Notes: The rates of solvolysis of l-aryl-l-phenyl-2,2-dimethylpropyl(1) p-nitrobenzoates and of aryldiphenylmethyl-p-nitrobenzoates (2) were measured in 80% acetone. An inverse order of reactivity, kp-CF3/km- CF3 〉 l was observed for 1 but not for 2. The X-ray crystallogoraphic study of the parent compounds, l,l-diphenyl-2,2-dimethylpropyl-p-nitrobenzoate (1b) and triphenylemethyl benzoate (3b), and of 2-phenyl-2-propyl-p-nitrobenzoate (4) indicated that in the highly congested system 1 both phenyl rings were nonplanar, whereas the phenyl rings in 3 and 4 were essentially planar.

Notes: Rate constants of solvolysis of α-tert-butyl(2-naphthyl)methyl chloride (1), 9-fluorenyl chloride (2) and a series of monosubstituted benzhydryl chlorides (3) in a wide range of solvents were measured. Grunwald-Winstein-type correlation analysis of log k for 2 and 3 against YBnCl, with or without nucleophilicity N, yielded less satisfactory linear correlations than that against log k(1). A new scale of solvent ionizing power, YxBnCl, for the correlation of solvolytic reactivities of benzylic chlorides with extended charge delocalization based on log k(1) was developed. Application to the mechanistic study suggested the solvolysis of 2 and 4-nitrobenzhydryl chloride were non-limiting. Hammett plots against σ+ constants exhibited more negative ρ values in less nucleophilic solvents. In a benzhydryl chloride containing a strong deactivating substituent, such as 4-nitro, the positive charge delocalizes mainly over the unsubstituted ring in the cationic transition state. The uneven charge distribution was also confirmed by Mulliken population analysis at the level of the RHF/6-31G*//RHF/3-21G(*) basis set for cations. Comparison of the results of correlation analysis using the equation log(k/k0) = mY vs the equation log(k/k0) = mY+hI, and using the equation log(k/k0) = mY+lN vs the equation log(k/k0) = mY+lN+hI indicated the use of YBnCl or YxBnCl could give a better understanding of solvolytic mechanisms than the combinatorial use of YCl and I. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The peak potentials of substituted α,α,α-trifluoroacetophenones were measured in acetonitrile with 0·1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate. The cyclic voltammograms indicated an irreversible electrochemical process for the first wave (Epc1) and a partially reversible one for the second wave (Epc2) when the scan rate was slower than 100 mV s- 1. Excellent linear correlations were observed for Epc1 with σ constants (ρ = 0·526, r = 0·999) and for Epc2 with σ- constants (ρ = 0·605, r = 0·998), respectively. Therefore, unknown σ values such as -0·36 for 3, 4-ethyleneoxy can be estimated from these correlations. The mechanism of the electrode process probably involves a single electron transfer and the formation of a pinacol.

Notes: An excellent linear correlation of oxygen-17 substituent chemical shifts (SCS) for twelve α, α, α-trifluoroacetophenones with single σ+ constants, δ = 24·6σ+ + 556·3 (correlation coefficient 0·998) has been observed. However, from this plot, an SCS of 34·3 ppm for 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone will give a corresponding σ+ (γ+) value of 1·44 for a methyl group, which is not in agreement with 0·63-0·79 obtained from solvolytic rate data.

Notes: The advantage of using the YBnCl scale over the YCl scale in Grunwald-Winstein-type correlation analysis was demonstrated by the kinetic evidence of a significant nucleophilic solvent intervention in the solvolysis of 2-aryl-2-chloropropanes. A depression of log k values measured in ethanol-trifluoroethanol mixtures and a positive azide salt effect were observed.

Notes: A new Y scale for the correlation of solvolytic reactivities for benzylic ρ-nitrobenzoates was established based on rate data for 2-phenyl-2-adamantyl ρ-nitrobenzoate, and from which the solvent assistance in the solvolysis of tert-cumyl ρ-nitrobenzoate is suggested.
