Notes: The fast identification and accurate characterization of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene (ABS) terpolymers by computer aided Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is described. Samples are prepared as films from chloroform suspensions and identified by a library search routine after FTIR measurement. Calibration curves of monomer specific absorptions obtained from physical mixtures of a known terpolymer with different amounts of the corresponding homopolymers are used to quantify the incorporation ratios of unknown ABS systems.

Notes: On clot-promoting surfaces, intact normal blood or plasma deposits fibrinogen and then supplants it with high molecular weight kininogen (HMWK). On glass, plasma layers of less than about 25 μm thick, while still containing enough fibrinogen to coat the surrounding surfaces, lack sufficient HMWK per surface area to remove this fibrinogen deposit. Thus normal intact citrated plasma allowed to enter the space between a glass slide and a convex lens resting belly-down on the slide will leave a disc of fibrinogen where the thickness of plasma layer was below this “critical height” H. The discs of fibrinogen left by plasma that lacks HMWK pathologically or by activation or dilution, are larger - the required H being greater. The present study shows that plasma dilution (final volume divided by original plasma volume) plotted against H yields a straight line. In preliminary series, the slope of this line increases with the atomic weight of five metals whose oxidized surfaces were used as substrates. In whole blood collected in either heparin or ACD, a circle of platelets adheres to oxidized silicon, anodized tantalum, or glass; this circle is similar in size to the one of fibrinogen left by plasma.

Notes: The applicability of 2D EXSY NMR spectroscopy for studying quantitatively the dynamic behaviour in three aroylcyanoketene-S, S-dimethylacetals was tested by means of 1H NMR spectroscopy. It can be concluded that the method is a reasonable qualitative supplement to complete line-shape analysis.

Notes: Push-pull alkenes with variable structure were investigated with respect to the influence of the different substituents at the central C,C double bond on the dynamic behaviour of this type of compound. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic investigations were carried out for ketene-S,S-, -S,N- and -N,N-acetals. HMO calculations were employed to discuss the related π-electron density distributions.

Description / Table of Contents: Extremely thin carbon foils were obtained: 1by reduction of graphite oxide (G.O.) suspended in dilute sodium hydroxide,2by deflegration of heated G.O.The adsorption of nitrogen, methylene blue and phenol were measured as well as the catalytic efficiency in the HBr synthesis. With the samples obtained by reduction of G. O., larger surface areas were found by adsorption from solution than by nitrogen adsorption or from the catalytic efficiency. This is explained by the agglomeration of the foils on isolation. With the deflagration product, however, all methods gave the same surface areas. The cause of this different adsorption behaviour is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Association Behaviour of Strannatranes1-Alkylstannatranes (R = Me, Et, Bu, Phenyl) associate in unpolar solvents to relatively stable trimeric units. In aqueous solution 1-methylstannatran displays no autoassociation. 1-t-Butylstannatran, 1-o-tolylstannatran, and 1-alkylthiostannatranes are monomeric in all kinds of solvents. The association behaviour is characterized by molecular mass estimation and 1H-, 13C-, and 119Sn-NMR measurements.
In wäßriger Lösung zeigt 1-Methylstannatran keine Selbstassoziation.

Notes: The mechanical properties of test specimens from centrally injection-molded disks made of short glass fiber-reinforced polyamide 6,6 were tested under conditions of monaxial and biaxial constant strain rate and impact stress. In addition, the disposition of the glass fibers in the molded parts was established by optical microscopy and roentgenographic methods. Image analysis was used to measure the reduction of mean fiber length caused by processing and to determine quantitatively the fiber orientation. The possible existence of a correlation between fiber orientation data, as obtained from photomicrographs of polished sections, mechanical properties, and fracture characteristics is discussed.

Notes: Properties of short and especially long fiber reinforced thermoplastics highly depend on fiber length distribution in the processed material and local fiber orientation in the processed part. Good mechanical performance is achieved, if overall mean fiber length is high and fiber orientation is well adapted to the external stress situation. If non optimized processing parameters are applied, a decay in mean fiber length and unfavorably orientated fibers in areas of high stress may result. Knowledge of morphological parameters provides quantitative information about the injection molding process and the design of the cavity. Recent advances in automated methods of measuring fiber length and spatial fiber orientation, which are based on image processing systems, reveal even small differences in morphology. Measuring spatial fiber orientation on polished cross-sections by means of an image processor is a newer concept, that allows fast and quantitative description and optimization of the mold filling process. Some examples show the performance of the method; the measured fiber orientation is used to model thermal expansion and Young's modulus.
