Description / Table of Contents: Direct Photolysis of Carbonyl Sulfide in Alcohols and Acetonitrile in the Presence of Olefins. Reactions of Triplet Sulfur Atoms with Norbornene in Ethanol and 1, 4-DioxanePhotolysis of COS in methanol as well as in acetonitrile in the presence of cyclohexene or 1-octene gives rise to the formation of the corresponding episulfides due to the addition of triplet sulfur atoms, S(3P). With norbornene, however, episulfide formation ist not observed; only diastereomeric dinorbornyl sulfides 1a and 1b are obtained if the reaction is carried out in ethanol, whereas norbornyl 1,4-dioxanyl sulfide (5) is produced in addition to 1 a and 1 b, if 1,4-dioxane is used as solvent. The mode of formation of these compounds is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Direct Photolysis of Carbonyl Sulfide in Alkanes in the Presence of Olefins. Reactions of Singlet Sulfur Atoms; Formation of Sulfides and DisulfidesPhotolysis of carbonyl sulfide in solution at λexc = 2537 Å results in the formation of carbon monoxide and singlet sulfur atoms, S(1D), which insert into alkane C—H bonds to give mercaptans even in the presence of olefins (investigated up to olefin-conc. = 0.3 M). Prolonged irradiation leads to the photolytic decomposition of the mercaptans to H-atoms and alkanesulfenyl radicals and thus to the formation of sulfides and disulfides. Norbornyl alkyl sulfides are easily prepared by this method. -  Episulfides may be formed by addition of S(1D) as well as of triplet sulfur atoms, S(3P), to the olefinic double bond; the yields, however, are rather low under the experimental conditions used.

Description / Table of Contents: Photochemical and Thermal Addition Reactions of Dimethyl Acetylenedicarboxylate with Thiophene and 2,5-Dimethylthiophene1b)Thermal diene synthesis of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, diphenylacetylene, and 2-butyne with thiophene or 2,5-dimethylthiophene at temperatures between 165 and 330° leads to substituted benzene derivatives with concomitant sulfur elimination. At room temperature the sensitized and non-sensitized photo-addition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to thiophene or 2,5-dimethylthiophene yield also dimethyl phthalate and the 3,6-dimethyl-substituted dimethyl phthalate, respectively. The sensitized photoreaction proceeds via triplet-excited thiophenes and is mechanistically interpreted as occuring via biradical intermediates that either undergo ring-closure directly to the phthalate under simultaneous sulfur elimination or lead to instable 1,4-addition products with subsequent sulfur extrusion; in the latter case, the photo-addition would occur formally as a Diels-Alder reaction.
