Notizen: Summary 9 males, ages 19–29 were exercised strenuously on a treadmill for 10 min. The test was repeated on 3 separate occasions during which the subjects inspired gas mixtures of 16% O2, 21% O2 (Balance N2), or 100% O2. Before and after each of these tests blood samples were taken for analyses of blood lactate, plasma glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, creatine phosphokinase, and lactic dehydrogenase, and hematocrit. The increases in blood lactate following the strenuous exercise were different under the 3 test conditions (16% O2 〉 21% O2 〉 100% O2) (P 〈 0.05). This apparent alteration in the level of cellular hypoxia did not significantly alter the release of enzymes following exercise. Post-exercise increases in hematocrit were not significantly changed under the 3 test conditions. The results indicate that levels of post-exercise plasma enzyme activities are not modified by changes in muscle hypoxia as indicated by venous blood lactate levels. Hypoxia may be a contributing factor to enzyme release but could not be considered the primary mechanism.
