Notes: Summary The effects of chronic mechanical stimulation induced by glass balls or paraffin balls on precursor lesions of the urinary bladder of male Wistar strain rats induced by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (BBN) in the drinking water were studied. When foreign bodies were present in the bladder, proliferative lesions of the urinary bladder epithelium were found even without administration of carcinogen. When the foreign bodies were implanted into the urinary bladder and then rats were given BBN in the drinking water for the first 4 weeks of the experimental period, a high incidence of tumors of the urinary bladder was observed. The incidence of tumors induced by BBN was increased by the presence of glass balls or paraffin balls in the urinary bladder. These results clearly show that foreign bodies in the urinary bladder have a significant effect in promoting carcinogenesis of the urinary bladder in rats.

Notes: Summary Chemotherapeutic agents were evaluated for effect on the development of urinary bladder tumors induced by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (BBN) in male Wistar strain rats. Seven hundred and two rats were given 0.05% BBN in drinking water for 8 weeks. After BBN treatment, the animals were divided into 26 groups to follow regimens of single chemotherapy. All drugs were administered intraperitoneally except in one group that was treated orally. In our experimental series, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), N-(2-tetrahydrofuryl)-5-fluorouracil (FT-207), carbazilquinone (CQ), vincristine (VCR) and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) were effective in inhibiting the incidence of bladder tumor, however, adriamycin (ADM), mitomycin C (MMC), neocarsinostatin (NCS), cyclophosphamide (CPM) and bleomycin (BLM) were not effective.

Notes: To investigate which component of the plasma membrane of the hamster egg plays the central role in the sperm-egg fusion, the egg membrane was treated with a variety of proteolytic, carbohydrate-hydrolyzing, lipid-hydrolyzing, and other enzymes. The only enzyme that markedly effected the ability of the egg membrane to fuse with spermatozoa was phospholipase C. The lipid moieties of the egg plasma membrane (and possibly of the sperm membrane) must be of primary importance in sperm-egg fusion at fertilization.
