Summary Reperfusion of the ischemic intestine results in injury to the microvasculature and mucosal membrane. Inflammatory mediators released as a consequence of oxygen radical formation at the time of reperfusion promote neutrophil adhesion and emigration in postcapillary venules. Agents that interfere with leukocyte adherence afford significant protection against reperfusion injury.
