Notizen: Abstract Since the beginning of this century evidence has accumulated which demonstrates that non-mammalian vertebrates possess photoreceptors situated deep within the brain. While many attempts have been made to localize these sensory cells, studies have either failed or been inconclusive. In this report we have used several experimental approaches to localize the deep brain photoreceptors of the lizard Anolis carolinensis. Using 3 antibodies that bind vertebrate cone opsins, we have immunolabelled cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons located at the ventricular border within the nucleus ventromedialis of the septum. Western blot analysis indicates that these antibodies recognized a single 40 kD protein in ocular, anterior brain, and pineal extracts. Immunoblots of rodent brain did not show a similar protein band. We have also identified specific retinoids associated with phototransduction (11-cis and all-trans-3,4-didehydroretinaldehyde) within anterior brain extracts. This combined data provides the most detailed analysis of deep brain photoreceptors in any vertebrate. Consequently, we feel Anolis provides an excellent model to study this unexplored sensory system of the vertebrates.

Notizen: Summary A study of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase isozyme expression in Triticum turgidum conv. durum /Hordeum chilense monosomic addition lines has revealed the location of two structural genes, 6-pgd-H ch 2 and Mdh-H ch 1, on chromosome 1Hch of H. chilense. The homoeology between 1Hch and other chromosome of Triticeae related species is discussed on the basis of isozyme gene analysis.

Notizen: Summary The meiotic behaviour of the amphiploid Hordeum chilense X Triticum turgidum conv. durum using a C-banding staining method is studied. Nine pairs of chromosomes at metaphase-1 (4A, 7A and the seven of the B genome) were identified and the remaining wheat chromosomes (1A, 2A, 3A, 5A and 6A) and seven of the chilense (1 to 7 H ch chromosomes) were assigned to its particular genome. A similar mean number of univalents from parental genomes (wheat and wild barley) were found. No meiotic pairing between chilense and turgidum chromosomes was detected. Differences in the meiotic behaviour per chromosome and amongst genomes are explained on the basis of cytomorphological and heterochromatin characteristics.

Notizen: Summary Polyacrylamide and starch gel electrophoresis of esterase (EST), glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and phosphoglucomutase (PGM) isozymes in Hordeum chilense, Triticum turgidum conv. durum, the amphiploid H. chilense X T. turgidum (Tritordeum), and the durum wheat/H. chilense monosomic addition lines revealed the chromosomal location of one EST locus, two GOT loci and one PGM locus. Loci Est-H ch1 and Got-H ch2 were found on chromosome 6Hch,Got-H ch3 on chromosome 3Hch, and Pgm-H ch1 on chromosome 4Hch. These results lend evidence for the assumed homoeology relationships between chromosomes of Triticeae species.

Notizen: Abstract. The extraretinal and extrapineal photoreceptors of three species of adult lamprey, sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) and silver lamprey (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis) were studied using antibodies raised against photoreceptor rod and cone opsins, α-transducin and arrestin. In all three species cells in the pineal organ (P), parapineal organ (PP), nucleus preopticus (T5), nucleus commissurae postopticae (D8), nucleus ventralis hypothalami (D10) and nucleus dorsalis hypothalami (D11) were labelled by one or more of the anti-opsin antibodies. In addition, anti-arrestin antibodies labelled cells within the D8 and anti-α-transducin antibodies labelled cells within the pineal complex and hypothalamus (primarily D8 and/or D10). A more variable and species dependent pattern of opsin, arrestin and α-transducin labelling was observed within the nucleus commissurae postinfundibularis (D12) in an area comprising the nucleus dorsalis thalami pars subhabenularis (D4sh) and nucleus dorsalis thalami pars caudalis/nucleus commissurae posterioris (D4c/M1), and in the proximity of the second Müller cells in the ventrocaudal diencephalon (2.MZ/M6). The majority of the neurons labelled within the pineal and parapineal organs and hypothalamus were periventricular with clear cerebrospinal fluid contacts (CSF-contacting neurons). Labelled neurons in the epithalamic (D4sh and D4c/M1) and caudal diencephalon (2.MZ/M6) had no obvious ventricular contacts. We speculate that the ”primitive” vertebrate brain of lampreys represents an ancestral condition in which different populations of encephalic photoreceptors are associated with different behavioural and physiological responses. Image-forming vision needs an eye, but irradiance detection does not require a specialised organ. Rather the photoreceptors could be closely associated with their effector systems within the brain.
