Notes: Ring Enlargement of 1,2-Thiazol-3(2H)-one-1,1-dioxides and 3-Amino-2H-azirines to 4H-1,2,5-Thiadiazocin-6-one-1,1-dioxidesReaction of 3-amino-2H-azirines 2 with the 1,1-dioxides 4 and 7 of 1,2-thiazol-3(2H)-ones and 1,2-thiazoli-din-3-ones, respectively, in i-PrOH at room temperature leads to 4H-1,2,5-thiadiazocin-6(5H)-one-1,1-dioxides 5 (Scheme 2, Table) and the corresponding 7,8-dihydro derivatives 8 (Scheme 4), respectively. The structure of some of the new 8-membered heterocycles as well as the structure of the minor by-product 6 (Scheme 3) have been established by X-ray crystallography (Chapt. 4). The proposed reaction mechanism for the ring expansion to 5 and 8 (Scheme 2) is in accordance with previously published results of reactions of 2 and NH-acidic heterocycles and is further supported by the results of the reaction of 4a and the (1-15N)-labelled aminoazirine 2a*.

Notes: 1,3-Oxathiolanc Synthesis: Spirocyclic 1,3-Oxathiolanes from the Lewis-Acid-Catalyzed Reaction of Cyclic Trithiocarbonates and OxiranesThe cyclic trithiocarbonates 1.3-dithiolane-2-thione (4) and 1,3-dithiole-2-thione (9) in 1,2-dichloroethane and MeCN, respectively, react with alkyl- and phenyl-substituted oxiranes 2 in the presence of Lewis acids to give 1-oxa-4,6,9-trithiaspiro[4.4]nonanes 5 and 6 (Scheme 2) and 1-oxa-4,6,9-trithiaspiro[4.4]non-7-enes 10 and 11 (Scheme 3), respectively. The reactions proceed regioselectively yielding 2-alkyl (5, 10) and 3-phenyl derivatives (6, 11) as the main products. From the reaction of 4 and 2-phenyloxirane (2e) with TiCl4, 2-phenyl-1,4,6,9-tetrathia-spiro[4.4]nonane (7) is isolated as a minor product. The molecular structures of 5a, 6e, and 7 are established by X-ray crystallography.

Notes: The benzyl-protected glycosyl acetates 1, 6, 11, and 15 react with MeOPPh2 under catalysis by TMSOTf to yield diastereoselectively the glycosylphosphine oxides 2, 3, 8, 12, 13, and 16, with a strong preference for the 1,2-cis-configurated anomers. Hydrogenolysis of the major products gave the crystalline, unprotected phosphine oxides 4, 9, 14, and 17, of which 4 was transformed in to the acetate 5, and 9 into the benzoate 10. The benzylated phosphine oxides 4, 8, 12, and 16 were reduced with Cl3SiH in the presence of a tertiary amine to form the phosphines 18, 21, 24, and 26, which were transformed into the phosphine sulfides 19, 22, 25, and 27. Moreover, 18 and 21, were characterized as the borane adducts 20, and 23. The structure of the (arabinofuranosyl)phosphine oxide 12, the corresponding sulfide 25, and of the borane complex 20 were established by X-ray analysis. According to NMR spectroscopy, the equatorial pyranosylphosphine oxide 8, the sulfide 22, and the borane complex 23 adopt a 4C1 conformation. The axial phosphine oxide 2 is a flattened 4C1, the sulfide 19 exists as a B2,5, and the borane complex 20 is a flattened 4C1 in the solid sate and a B2,5 in solution. Thus, the conformational behavior of these α-D-glucopyranose derivatives reflects the steric requirement of the P-substituents.

Notes: Regioselective 1,3-Dipolar Cycloadditions of Thiocarbonyl Ylides with 1,3-Thiazole-5(4H)-thionesThe thiocarbonyl ylides 13 and 1,3-thiazol-5(4H)-thiones 1 undergo a smooth reaction to yield spirocyclic 1,3-dithiolanes 14-16 (Schemes 4-6). The 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions occur in a regioselective manner, but the orientation of the thiobcnzophenone-S-methylide (13b) differs from that of the cycloalkane thione-S-methylides 13a and 13c. Whereas the 1,3-cycloadduct with 13b is formed in accordance with frontier-orbital considerations, the inverse orientation in the reactions with 13a and 13c most likely is the result of steric hindrance in the transition state. The thiocarbonyl ylides have been prepared in situ from the corresponding 2,5-dihydro-1,3,4-thiadiazoles 12. The more stable aliphatic precursors 12a and 12c undergo decomposition at 50°, the unstable 12b at -30°.

Notes: Reaction of 1,3-Thaiazole-5(4H)-thiones and DiazometaneReaction of 4,4-dimethyl-1,3-thiazol-5(4H)-thiones 1 with diazomethane in Et2O at -78° or 0° leads to a mixture of the corresponding 1,4-dithiane 10,1,3-dithiole 11, thiirane 12, 4,5-dihydro-5methylidene-1,3-thiazole 13, and 1,3-thiazol-5(4H)-one 14 (Scheme 3). The structures of 10a, 11a, and 11bhave been established by X-ray crystallography. The formation of the products can be explained via an intermediate thiocaronyl ylide of type E (Scheme 4), generated by the 1.3-dipolar cycloaddition of diazomethane with the exocyclic C=S bond of 1 and elimination of N2. Head-to-head dimerization of E yields 10, 1, 3-dipolar cycloaddition of E and 1 gives the ‘Schönberg product’ 11, and cyclization of E leads to 12, which undergoes a desulfurization to give 13. The thiazolone 141 is formed by hydolysis of E. The similarity of the ratio of the products at -78° and at 0° shows that, in contrast to the reaction of 1 and 2-diazopropane, the elimination of N2 in the primary cycloadduct already occurs at -78°.

Notes: [Rh1(η5-azulene)(cod)]+BF4- complexes 3a-g (cod = (Z,Z)-cycloocta-1,5-diene) have been synthesized by reaction of [Rh1(cod)]+BF4- in THF with the corresponding azulenes 1a-g (Table 1). The structure of [Rh1(cod)(η5-guaiazulene)]+BF4- (3a) has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis (Fig. 1 and 2). The Rh-atom is oriented above the five-membered ring of the azulene with almost equal Rh—C distances to all five C-atoms of the ring. The (Z,Z)-cycloocta-1,5-diene ring occurs in two enantiomorphic distorted (C2v → C2) tub conformations in the crystals (Fig. 3). In CDCl3 solution, the cod ligand in the complexes 3 shows a dynamic behavior on the 1H-NMR time scale which is best explained by rotation of the cod ligand relative to the azulene ligands around an imaginary cod—Rh—azulene axis. The new complexes 3 catalyze the formation of heptalene-1,2-dicarboxylates 2 from dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (ADM) and the corresponding azulenes 1 just as effectively as [RuH2(PPh3)4] and the analogous [RhH(PPh3)4] complex in MeCN solution (Table 3). On grounds of simplicity, 3 can be generated in situ, when [RhCl(cod)]2 is applied as catalyst (Table 3).

Notes: 4,4-Disubstituted Imidazole Derivatives from the Reaction of 3-Amino-2H-azirines with SalicylamideReaction of 3-amino-2H-azirines 1a-c with salicylamide (7) in MeCN leads to imidazoles 10 and 11 in different rates, depending on the conditions. In the case of 1a and 1b, 11a and 11b, respectively, have been obtained as the main product at 50°; in reactions at 80°, 10a and 10b are the favored products (Tables 1 and 2). 2,2-Dimethyl-3-(N-methyl-N-phenylamino)-2H-azirine (1c) reacts with 7 in MeCN mainly to 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5,5-dimethyl-3,5-dihydroimidazol-4-one (10a); in boiling toluene, 11c is formed with low preference (Table 3). The structure of the products has been established by spectroscopic means, and in the case of 10b and 11c, by X-ray crystallography. Two different reaction mechanisms for the formation of the products are discussed (Scheme 2).

Notes: The X-ray structure of 15-apoviolaxanth-15-al ( = (1′S,2′R,4′S,2E,4E,6E,8E)-9-(1′,2′-epoxy-4′-hydroxy-2′,6′,6′-trimethylcyclohexyl)-3,7-dimethylnona-2,4,6,8-tetraenal) is reported. The four symmetry-independent molecules in the asymmetric unit are linked into X-shaped spirals by intermolecular H-bonds. Additional H-bonds interconnect the spirals, forming wave-like chains. The geometry of the polyene side chain possesses the same in-plane bending observed for related retinal and carotenoid compounds. The polyene side chain deviates from planarity by twists of up to 10° about each bond; some of the largest twists are about C=C bonds. The epoxycyclohexane ring possesses a distorted ‘C(3)-sofa’ conformation. The torsion angles about the bond connecting the polyene chain to the cyclohexane ring are compared with equivalent torsion angles in molecules containing epoxide rings substituted with a π-system in order to examine possible interactions between the epoxide group and the π-system, either through pseudoconjugation, or through an interaction of the nonbonding orbitals of the epoxy O-atom with the π-orbitals of the polyene chain. The latter is considered to be more likely.
