Porous Vycor Brand Glass has been investigated by solvent permeability, multilayer adsorption (BET method) and electron microscopy. A simple relationship has been found between KUHN's solvent permeability G and the reciprocal product of solvent viscosity and effective molecule volume in the gaseous state. The highest permeabilities a t comparable molecule radii were exhibited by the n-alkanes, the lowest by alcohols and water. The activation energies of DARCY's constant KD = G · η were ranging between -0.30 kcal/mole (water) and + 1.07 kcal/mole (benzene). An optimal limit for solute permeation is derived by solvent permeabilities, giving pore radii between 4.5 and 6 Å. These values are in good agreement with those from diffuse flow (5.5 Å) and electron microscopy (8.5 Å).
