    Notes: Evidence is presented in favour of a natural environmental alkylation process as a source of atmospheric vapour-phase alkyllead. Several species of marine flora have been cultured under laboratory conditions with added doses of inorganic lead, and production of alkyllead, predominantly trimethyllead (Me3Pb+), has been measured. Atmospheric concentrations and ratios of alkyl and inorganic lead at urban, rural and remote sites suggest that differential decay and deposition processes for different species, together with an environmental alkylation source, may explain enhanced ratios of total alkyllead/total lead in maritime air masses.

    Notes: Concentrations of tetra-, tri and di-alkyl-lead compounds in rain have been measured at rural and urban sites in England. The measurements are compared with similar data collected in the early 1980s, prior to a 72% reduction in the emission of lead from combustion of leaded petrol. Whilst concentrations of inorganic lead have fallen broadly in line with emissions of automotive lead, alkyl-lead concentrations in rain have fallen by only 50% or less, and thus the ratio of alkyl-lead to inorganic lead in rain has increased appreciably. The reason for this phenomenon is unclear. The data suggest that lead in rainwater would fall to approximately 2 μg dm-3 if automotive lead emissions fell to zero.

    Notes: Experimental instrumentation for the speciation of butyltin compounds by hydride generation and gas chromatography-quartz furnace atomic absorption spectrometry is described. Evaluation of a number of extraction methods revealed that simple acid leaching of oyster samples gave adequate recoveries. The levels of each butyltin species in oyster flesh and gill are reported together with the tentative identification of a mixed methylbutyltin compound.
