Notes: Summary In the muscles of lower leg of the non-anesthetized frog (both sciatic nerves divided) have been measured: 1. the blood flow by a modification of the venous occlusion method. The mean blood flow in 29 frogs was 5.7 ml/(min×100 ml tissue) (lowest value 2, highest value 12.5 ml); 2. the oxygen tension (“oxygen-tension-field”) by micro-Pt-electrodes. In 176 measurements the mean value was 49 Torr (lowest value 1, highest value 100 Torr). The criticalpO2 was between 6 and 8 Torr; 3. a) the local oxygen consumption measuring the time of the tissue to consume all its dissolved oxygen. The mean oxygen consumption in 50 measurements was 0.09 ml/(min×100 ml tissue) (lowest value 0.02, highest value 0.25 ml); b) the integrated oxygen consumption by the Fick-principle. In 2 frogs the consumption was 0.011 ml/(min×100 ml tissue); 4. the systolic blood pressure by the Riva-Rocci method. In 29 frogs the blood pressure was 38 Torr (lowest value 25, highest value 53 Torr). In relation to the warm-blooded animals the frog has an elevated resting blood flow. In the resting muscles the oxygen supply is nearly 10 times higher than the oxygen demand (blood oxygen utilisation about 10%). In consequence of the high blood flow the mean oxygen tension in the frog's muscles is about 10 Torr higher than in the muscles of warm-blooded animals. The frog's muscles show only a weak reactive hyperemia (average: +100%), that means, a higher demand of oxygen will be satisfied mainly by a higher blood oxygen utilisation instead of an augmented blood flow in the warm-blooded animals.

Notes: Summary In anesthetized guinea pigs the action of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, isoproterenol, and reactive hyperaemia on arterial blood pressure, blood flow in the lower leg (measured by venous occlusion plethysmography), and distribution ofpO2-values a platinum-O2-microelectrode was used. By continuous recording of thepO2 the electrode was moved slowly through the muscle tissue by constant velocity (33 μ/sec). During the action of norepinephrine, epinephrine, isoproterenol, and following temporary arterial occlusion a linear proportion was found between meanpO2-values or meanpO2-gradients and mean blood flow values (between 1.3 and 7.8 ml/min ·100 ml tissue). During the action of acetylcholinepO2-values decreased in spite of increased blood flow. The reduced number of higherpO2-values and the decreasedpO2-gradients appear to indicate a relatively small number of open (perfused) capillaries during the action of acetylcholine. The reduced tissue oxygen delivery is due to enlarged diffusion distances and smaller capillary surface areas.
