Abstract. A self-assembled coherent array of tungsten ultra-fine particles of about 150 nm diameter around a laser-irradiated mark on a single-crystal tungsten surface was discovered. The substrates were irradiated by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at the second-harmonic wavelength (532 nm) under low pressure in an inert-gas atmosphere. The array has been observed only on the single-crystal tungsten surface. If we can produce the coherent-array hemisphere with a higher aspect ratio, it may have substantial potential for widely diversified industrial applications, ranging from emission cathodes for a field-emission display (FED) to microelectronic devices.
