    Notizen: Abstract Films of short carbon fiber reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composite were formed by compression molding pellets for 10 min at 380 °C under air. A heating stage was used to prepare isothermally treated PEEK composites before DSC scan. The dependence of degree of crystallinity on the heating rate (10–80 °C/min) was investigated for specimens crystallized at different temperatures. The results indicated that 50 °C/min was an optimum heating rate to suppress the reorganization and to avoid the superheating of high crystallinity specimens with the sample weight of 10 mg. The upper peak temperature of double-melting peaks continued to increase with crystallization temperature. This peak temperature was related to the transition from regime II to III. The phenomenon of lower crystallinity and higher melting temperature supports the interpretation that the upper melting peak corresponded to crystals growing during the earlier stage of isothermal crystallization.

    Notizen: An optical microscope equipped with a video photograph system was used to follow the growth of spherulites. Under nitrogen atmosphere, the growth rates at 290 and 300°C suggest that when the melt of PEEK has been equilibrated for 15 min at 400°C, the subsequent crystallization behavior was nearly independent of the prior thermal history. Linear growth rates of crystallization of PEEK have been measuredin the temperature range of 260-325°C for melt-pressed films and solvent cast films. Detailed kinetic analysis indicated that PEEK exhibited an unmistakable regime II → III transition at 296 ± 1°C. The II → III transition was clearly present irrespective of the rather drastic changes in U*. It is interesting that the branching and crosslinking retarded the growth rate of PEEK, but a transition from regime II to regime III still existed. For melt-pressed films after equilibration at 400°C for 15 min, values of σ and q suggest that U* should be taken nearer to 1500 cal/mol in the case of T∞ = Tg - 30 K and 2000 cal/mol in the case of T∞ = Tg - 51.6 K. The Kg(III)/Kg(II) ratio (1.32) was not as close to the predicted value of 2 as was Hoffman's ratio. For PEEK, the Thomas-Staveley constant (β) should be closer to 0.25 or 0.3 instead of 0.1. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 1335-1348, 1998

    Notizen: The thermal stability of a short carbon-fiber-reinforced PEEK composite was assessed by thermogravimetry and by a Rheometrics dynamic analyzer. The results indicated that holding for 10 min at 380°C was a suitable melting condition to avoid the thermooxidative degradation under air. After proving that the heating rate of 50°C/min can be used to evaluate the crystallinity, a heating stage was used to prepare nonisothermally crystallized specimens using cooling rates from 1 to 100°C/min after melting at 400°C for 3 or 15 min. The degree of crystallinity and the melting behavior of these specimens were investigated by DSC at a heating rate of 50°C/min. The presence of three or four regions indicated that the upper melting temperature, Tm, changed with the crystallization temperature. The first region with the highest Tm, which corresponded to the cooling rate of 1°C/min, can be associated with the crystallization in regime II. There was a second region where Tm decreased as the amount of crystals formed in regime II decreased with increasing cooling rate from 5 to 20°C/min. The third region, a plateau region, corresponded to regime III condition in which the crystals were imperfect. In the fourth region, the cooling was so fast that crystallization was incomplete during the cooling for the melting condition of 400°C for 15 min. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci.     Notizen: During cooling at a rate of 10°C/min from the melt state of PEEK we have followed the growth of spherulites using an optical microscope equipped with a camera. The isothermal growth rates of crystallization in the temperature range of 266-308°C could be estimated by means of a differential equation. These continuous growth rate data were used further for kinetic analysis, which indicated that PEEK exhibited an unmistakable regime II → III transition at 296°C. The results compared favorably with those obtained by the traditional isothermal method, which is time consuming.     Notizen: Theoretical research to simulate twin-jet impingement with cross-flow has been undertaken. An impinging twin jet coupled with cross-flow in closed ground effect has been studied by using the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a Jones-Launder κ-∊ two-equation turbulence model. The velocity results without cross-flow were compared with the data of Saripalli et al. and found to show good agreement. The calculated results show that several recirculating zones are distributed around the flow field. Their size and location are closely related to the jet exit height above the ground, the nozzle space and the strength of cross-flow. In addition, a fountain upwash flow occurs between the nozzles, and two low-pressure recirculating zones are induced by the interaction between the nozzle mainstream and the fountain upwash flow. This induce a loss of lift force of the aircraft. The effects of the cross-flow induce the sudden decrease in the lift force of the aircraft; the stronger the cross-flow, the lower is the lift force of the flow field.

    Notizen: A systematic study has been conducted to assess the performance of the TVD schemes for practical flow computation. The viewpoint adopted here is to treat the TVD schemes as a combination of the standard central difference scheme with numerical dissipation terms. The controlled amount of numerical dissipation modifies the computed fluxes to ensure that the solution is oscillation-free. Four variants of TVD schemes, two with upwind dissipation terms and two with symmetric dissipation terms, have been studied and compared with the conventional Beam-Warming scheme for inviscid and turbulent axisymmetric flow computations. The results obtained show that all four variants can accurately resolve the shock and flow profiles with fewer grid points than the Beam-Warming scheme. The convergence rates of the TVD schemes are also substantially superior to that of the Beam-Warming scheme. The combination of high accuracy, good robustness and improved computational efficiency offered by the TVD schemes makes them attractive for computing high-speed flow with shocks. In terms of the relative performances it is found that the symmetric schemes converge slightly faster but that the upwind schemes are less sensitive to the number of grid points being employed.

    Notizen: The combustion flow of a sudden-expansioin dump combustor with injecting side-inlet is analysed using the SIMPLE-C algorithm and the Jones-Launder k-∊ two-equation turbulence model. The transport properties of velocity, turbulence kinetic energy, temperature and combustion efficiency as a function of the injected mass fraction and the number of side-inlet nozzles are solved in this paper. The axial velocities of the sudden-expansion dump combustor without injected side-inlet flow are solved first and found to be in good agreement with the experimental data of Moon and Rudinger. For a fixed value of the side-inlet number the wall temperature and combustion efficiency of the dump combustor are decreased when the injected mass fraction is increased. For a fixed value of the injected mass fraction the wall temperature and combustion efficiency are decreased when the number of side-inlet nozzles is increased.
