Notes: Plasma polymerization of some cyano-containing organic compounds was carried out at 13.56 MHz from the gas phase. The resulting polymer films were smooth and pinhole free. The electrical conductivities of the polymer films varied from 10-12 to 10-7 S cm-1 depending upon which cyano-containing monomer was used. The Al/polymer film/ITO (indium-tin oxide) sandwich cells made from the films demonstrated a photovoltaic effect, and some of them showed good rectifying behavior. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV) were utilized to characterize the structure of the product polymers. The effects of the original structure in the starting monomers on the structure of the resulting polymers are investigated. The influence of incident light intensity on the photovoltaic characteristics was also investigated.

Notes: The interfacial tensions of immiscible binary blends of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) and polybutadiene (PBD) have been determined as a function of molecular weight and temperature. The technique employed for these measurements takes advantage of recent advances in the determination and analysis of pendant fluid drop profiles. The experimental data are compared to the predictions of square gradient theories and theories based on the diffusion equation approach as developed by Helfand and co-workers. Qualitative agreement is obtained with both types of theory when the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter is taken to be comprised of two terms: a temperature independent term of entropic origin; and an enthalpic term that is inversely dependent upon the temperature.

Notes: The performances of several composite membranes (PEC-1000, Teijin, HR-95, HR-98) and one asymmetric membrane (Solrox SC-200) in hyperfiltration are compared at 25°C using different aqueous feed solutions (0.1M and 0.5M NaCl, 0.5M 1,3-and 1,4-dioxan, 0.1M benzyl alcohol and 2-methoxybenzyl alcohol, 1,2- and 1,4-butandiol, and Triton feed solution). The effects of solute dissociation, polarization, and hydrogen bonding ability on solute permeability are discussed; steric effects are also being considered. Strong solute-membrane interactions are exhibited in hyperfiltration by systems with distinct hydrogen bonding capabilities of the solute with functional sites of the membrane matrix. Knowledge of solute-membrane interactions can be useful for elaborating separation and transport mechanisms.

Notes: The physiological activity of microorganisms in environments with low dissolved oxygen concentrations often differs from the metabolic activity of the same cells growing under fully aerobic or anaerobic conditions. This article describes a laboratory-scale system for the control of dissolved oxygen at low levels while maintaining other parameters, such as agitator speed, gas flowrate, position of sparger outlet, and temperature at fixed values. Thus, it is possible to attribute in dilute nonviscous fermentations all physiologic changes solely to changes in dissolved oxygen. Experiments were conducted with Azotobacter vinelandii and Escherichia coli. Critical oxygen concentrations for growth (that value of oxygen allowing growth at 97% of μmax) were measured as 0.35 ± 0.03 mg/L for A. vinelandii and 0.12 ± 0.03 mg/L for E. coli. These values are significantly different from the commonly quoted values for critical oxygen concentrations based on respiration rates. Because of the superior dissolved oxygen control system and an improved experimental protocol preventing CO2 limitation, we believe that the values reported in this work more closely represent reality.

Notes: A model for local heat transfer between a gas-fluidzed bed and a submerged tube is proposed based on combined dense-phase and lean-phase transport. The heat transfer process during dense-phase contact at the tube surface is modeled by packet renewal mechanism and the transfer process during lean-phase contact by fluid convection mechanism. The model predictions show good agreement with experimental local and average heat transfer coefficient data for horizontal tubes.

Notes: Ferromagnetic alloys, used in the form of „thermoseeds“ for surgical implantation, have been developed and used to induce localized hyperthermia in cancerous growths. Alloys of nickel with approx. 4 wt.% Si were chosen for this study because they have Curie temperatures in the desired range of 45-60°C. The thermoseeds were prepared by using either a special casting technique or casting and swaging followed by homogenization. The effects of these different processing schedules on the magnetic behavior of these alloys are discussed. In particular, the importance of minimizing oxidation during melting and heat treating, and the effects of homogenizing the thermoseeds on the relative permeability at temperatures near the Curie temperature are pointed out. The best processing schedule is casting small ingots while avoiding oxidation, followed by swaging, drawing, and homogenization. Actual induction heating experiments and the results from magnetization tests indicate that Ni-4 wt.% Si alloys prepared in this manner can be used as thermoseeds with predictable Curie temperatures. These thermoseeds can be used to obtain nearly uniform and constant temperatures in tumors with variable blood flows.
