Notes: The Raman scattering of nonplanar (form 2) poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) is described. Unique Raman bands not observed in the infrared spectra are found at 2973, 1437, 1327, 1198, and 1059 cm-1. Band assignments are discussed by comparing infrared and Raman spectra of form 2 PVF2.

Notes: Several copolymers as well as homopolymers of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride have been examined by Raman spectroscopy. Probabilities of concentrations of monomer sequences have been calculated from known reactivity ratios. Surface scattering intensities at some frequencies were found to be linearly proportional to specific microstructure concentrations. Normalization of scattering intensities was accomplished using the intensity of the CH2 asymmetric stretching mode at 2926 cm-1, which is common to all samples examined. Good correlation was found for the concentrations of comonomer sequences {B}, {BB}, {BBB}, {AA} and {AAAA} in which A denotes vinylidene chloride and B vinyl chloride.

Notes: Measurements of infrared absorbance as a function of temperature down to 77°K have been made on poly(ethylene terephthalate). Transitions observed by other techniques such as torsion pendulum measurements are reflected in the infrared measurements by an abrupt change in the slope of the absorbance versus temperature. The infrared measurements are made on bands of known structural origin so the structures contributing to each transition can be determined. The β transition is shown by infrared to be a composite of two peaks with the lower-temperature portion arising from the amorphous regions and the higher-temperature portion from the crystalline regions.

Notes: An unsaturated polyester resin and the styrene-crosslinked polyester were studied with laser Raman spectroscopy. Following the polyesterification reaction, Raman measurements showed that the polyester contained 55% fumarate and 45% maleate unsaturation. Additionally, the glycol fragment was indicated to exist as the gauche isomer. The 1213 cm-1 line is assigned to the glycol-ester linkage and can be measured to follow the conversion to polymer. After the crosslinking reaction, styrene was found to copolymerize preferentially with the fumarate unsaturation. There was no evidence of forming long-chain polystyrene crosslinks. Our results indicate that, after crosslinking, 41% of the fumarates have reacted with styrene and there is an average of two styrene molecules in each link.

Notes: Poly(vinyl fluoride) polymers prepared at different polymerization temperatures have been examined in the melt, oriented, and solid state by infrared spectroscopy. Bands arising from the head-to-tail and head-to-head-tail-to-tail portions of the polymer have been isolated and assigned. The head-to-head-tail-to-tail portion of the polymer crystallizes in the head-to-tail unit cell except for a portion of the 1,2-difluorethylene units which apparently have the gauche (out-of-plane) structure. The head-to-tail portion of the polymer is nearly atactic, but is somewhat rich in syndiotactic chain structure. Bands arising from local syndiotactic order are observed.

Notes: Polarized infrared measurements were made on polymer samples to obtain the structural changes occurring during the orientation process. The absorbances of the infrared bands were measured by determining the three components of the absorbance. Two components were obtained directly with plane-polarized light while the third is obtained by tilting the sample and extrapolating. Corrections were made for machine optics polarization, sample birefringence, polarizer inefficiency, anisotropy of the index of refraction, and scattering from the film surface. Data are reported for polyethylene obtained from cold-drawn specimens as a function of draw temperature. Polyethylene exhibits no strain-induced crystallization as a result of the chain-alignment process. Annealing of the drawn samples reperfects the distorted crystals.

Notes: Raman spectra have been obtained for a typical poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) of low crystallinity and for a highly crystalline sample of syndiotactic PVC obtained by irradiation of a urea-canal complex. Raman measurements have been made on the three different ordered chain structures possible for ordinary PVC. Extended and folded conformations for the syndiotactic structure and a helical structure for the isotactic molecule obey different selection rules and have different dichroic properties in the infrared and Raman spectra. The observed Raman spectrum is consistent with the model of the extended syndiotactic conformation for crystalline PVC. With the new Raman data some additional assignments can be made in the vibrational spectra of PVC.

Notes: Raman spectra are described for the three crystalline modifications of polybutene-1. The Raman frequencies are compared with infrared results and give good agreement. A normal-coordinate analysis for A-mode vibrations is presented for five possible helical conformations. The behavior of several calculated helix-sensitive bands is characterized. These results are applied to the experimental Raman frequencies and lead to the prediction of a 103 helix for the orthorhombic form III modification.

Notes: Raman spectra have been obtained from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in the solid and molten phases and in aqueous and chloroform solutions. Several new lines are observed or resolved in the Raman spectrum of the solid state as a result of using a high-power argon-ion laser as a source. The Raman spectra of the molten polymer and the chloroform solutions are indicative of a disordered structure, since additional Raman lines appear as a result of the additional rotational isomers. The Raman spectrum of the aqueous solution shows that considerably less structural change occurs upon dissolution in water.

Notes: A vibrational analysis has been carried out for the two crystalline forms of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2). The Raman spectrum of the planar form of PVF2 is also reported. The band assignments are made on the basis of the spectral properties including the infrared dichroism and Raman intensities. A force field is derived based on a force constant refinement procedure utilizing the frequency data for both crystal forms.
