Notes: Summary In the presence of 0.1–10.0 mg/1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) shoot-tips from young seedlings ofVicia narbonensis gave rise to callus-cultures which formed somatic embryos if 2,4-D was removed and replaced by lmg/1 NAA in a subsequent cultivation step. The 2,4-D concentration initially used for callus induction influenced the frequency of shoot-tips producing embryogenic callus, the mean embryo-number per embryogenic callus and the time required for embryo-development in the second cultivation-period. 10mg/1 2,4-D induced the highest percentages of explants showing embryogenesis and mean embryo numbers per callus. Different types of somatic embryos, based on cotyledon and hypocotyl morphology, were found. The frequency of embryos with normal shoots and roots was relatively low, suggesting that genetic changes might have occurred during the callus stage and caused a loss of morphogenetic capacity. Plantlets derived from somatic embryos could be grown to maturity.
