Notizen: Thermal and optical properties of multilayer films of miscible polyethyloxazoline (PEOx) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) have been studied as a function of time and temperature. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the distinct, characteristic Tg's of the component polymers of the original films disappear after only short heating periods above Tg, and a single transition appears. The new transition region is broad at first, but narrows on subsequent heating. The measurement of light transmittance as a function of wavelength through the heat-treated films also confirms the diffusion of the miscible polymers and gives results which are comparable to the thermal measurements. Films from immiscible polymers of polystyrene and PEOx retain their properties after various heat treatments. A qualitative discussion of the diffusion process as examined by the thermal measurements is presented.

Notizen: The crystallinity of a variety of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) specimens, produced by thermal annealing, has been measured by three x-ray diffractometric index methods and by an index method for differential scanning calorimetric data. The measurement procedures are termed indices since they involve various methods of ranking specimens in a relative manner between maximum and minimum crystallinity standards. Statistically different index values are determined by the various physical methods and procedures of calculation for many types of specimens. The integral index method, which utilizes x-ray diffractometric data, corresponds in a more precise manner to the calorimetric index than to the other two x-ray methods, for the cases in which oriented film is annealed in a vacuum oven and is subject to a continuous pumping environment. This treatment also produces a threefold increase in number-average molecular weight of PET film. Annealing in sealed ampules, Mn constant, produces substantially the same results for all three x-ray methods but different results for the calorimetric procedure. A relatively simple two-point procedure yields virtually the same trend as the more complicated indicial methods.

Notizen: The small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) approach has been employed in an effort to understand the deformation mechanism of semicrystalline polymers in terms of submicroscopic structure of lamellae. Isotropic melt-pressed polyethylenes of low, medium, and high densities (LDPE, MDPE, and HDPE, respectively) having spherulitic texture were investigated by SAXS for various Static elongations between 10% and 40%. The SAXS isointensity contours of the deformed polymers are anisotropic (elliptical) with the long axis perpendicular to the stretching direction. Slice averages at various azimuthal angles between 0° and 90° reveal distinct SAXS peaks with respect to scattering angle. The peak position of SAXS profile characterizes the long period or lamellar spacing, while integrated intensity distribution is relevant to lamellar orientation. At low elongations, there is an increase in intensity at both azimuthal angles of 0° and 90°, suggesting that excess scattering arises during deformation, probably associated with lamellar untwisting process. Lamellar orientation distribution and second-order orientation are defined to account for the lamellar orientation process. Experimental results are compared with Kratky's floating rod model coupled with Stein's lamellar untwisting model. The lamellar orientation closely follows the affine deformation scheme, while the lamellar spacing deviates appreciably from it, particularly at large elongations.

Notizen: We have measured the percentages of cis and trans Gly-Pro and X-Hyp peptide bonds in thermally unfolded type I collagen. 13C-nmr solution spectra show that 16% of the Gly-Pro and 8% of the X-Hyp bonds are cis in unfolded chick calvaria collagen. These results support the hypothesis that cis-trans isomerization is that rate-limiting step in the propagation of the collagen triple helix. We have used multinuclear solid-state nmr to study the molecular dynamics of the collagen backbone in tendon, demineralized bone, and intact bone as a function of temperature, hydration, and pH. These studies show that collagen backbone motions are characterized by a broad distribution of correlation times, τ, covering the range from 10-4 to 10-9 s. In the case of nonmineralized collagen, the root-mean-square fluctuations in azimuthal angle, γrms, range from ca. 10° when τ ∼ 10-9 s to ca. 30° when τ 〈 10-4 s; in the case of bone collagen, γrms values are about half as large as those found in nonmineralized collagen. Backbone motions are negligible at temperatures below -25°C. This is also the case at 22°C when demineralized bone collagen is lyophilized. In contrast, flexibility of hydrated demineralized bone collagen greatly increases as pH is lowered from 7 to 2. The more limited flexibility observed at neutral pH is a consequence of the intermolecular interactions that contribute to fibril organization and strength. However, the fibrils retain significant flexibility at physiological pH, enabling them to distribute stress and dissipate mechanical energy.
