    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Versagen von Aluminiumoxidschichten auf NiAl unter gradierter SchichtbelastungDas bruchmechanische Verhalten von Aluminiumoxidschichten auf NiAl wurde unter gradierter Schichtbelastung untersucht, die mittels 4-Punkt-Biegung und Kugeleindruck erzeugt wurde. Typische Anordnungen von Rissen und Abplatzungen der Oxidschichten auf der Seitenfläche von Biegebalken und in der Nähe von Kugeleindrücken werden gezeigt. Die Entwicklung von Rißmustern in der Schicht wird theoretisch analysiert, und die Möglichkeit der Bestimmung von Oxidbruchzähigkeit und -zugfestigkeit bei bekannter gradierter Schichtbelastung wird diskutiert. Die Analyse wurde durch Messungen der Schichtspannung mittels optischer Fluoreszenzspektroskopie unter Nutzung des piezospektroskopischen Effektes ergänzt.
    Notizen: The fracture-mechanical behaviour of alumina scales on NiAl has been investigated under a graded scale loading produced by four-point bending and spherical indentation. Typical crack and spallation patterns of oxide scales on the side face of bending bars and near spherical indents are presented. The development of crack patterns in the scale is analysed theoretically and the possibility of deriving the oxide fracture toughness and tensile strength from the patterns for known graded scale loading is discussed. The analysis has been complemented by stress measurements in the scale by means of optical fluorescence spectroscopy employing the piezo-spectroscopic effect.

    Notizen: The conventional thin film deposition equipment of LPVD has been modified for the preparation of nanometre-layer stacks of uniform thickness at reduced target/substrate separation. Therefore the planar target was replaced by a cylindrical one and the target motion regime has been modified.During thin film deposition a substrate translation is preferred instead of the usual rotation technique. With this arrangement the emission characteristic of the plasma source can be computer controlled and tailored via a stepper-motor-driven manipulator for the desired layer thickness profile across an extended substrate. Thus, for example, a homogeneous film thickness is obtained even for lower target/substrate distances, and an appropriate deposition rate can be maintained.First applications of the equipment are explained and compared with typical results of the conventional technique.

    Notizen: Monomeric collagen films were prepared by spin-coating of acidic collagen solutions on different atomically flat surfaces. The thin biomolecular coatings have been investigated by scanning force microscopy. Depending on both the wetting behaviour and the microtopology of the substrates used, different film morphologies have been observed. Collagen monomers cover the surface of hydrophilic substrates homogeneously, whereas pore formation due to dewetting processes takes place at non-structured hydrophobic surfaces. The size of pores depends on the evaporation velocity of the solvent during spin-coating. Topological and metric properties of the resulting networks have been analysed and compared to soap foam network structures.© 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: Nanometre-period nickel-carbon multilayers were used as a writing medium for nanostructure fabrication induced by gap voltage manipulations in a scanning tunnelling microscope. The choice of immiscible sample materials provided high-stability written metallic structures. Two well-distinguished hillock-like nanostructure types were observed, depending on the tip-sample separation, polarity and interaction time. Relatively slow local annealing under positive sample potential without a direct tip-sample contact resulted in the formation of nanostructures of 〈20 nm wide and a few nanometres high. Rapid melting followed by metal melt extrusion was observed if the tip contacted the sample during the nanostructure formation, independent of the polarity of the applied voltage. These metallic-like structures were tens of nanometres high and had a good electronic contrast to the initial carbon-coated surface. No traces of tip material were found in the processed areas. The shape of the nanostructures and the threshold voltage of their formation were strongly dependent on the tip condition. Possible courses of nanostructure formation are discussed.© 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
