Notes: Abstract We describe an implementation of a general standard basis algorithm, valid for any monomial ordering compatible with the natural semigroup structure. We concentrate on new strategies which have proved useful, in particular in the non-wellordering case. Moreover, we describe the first implementation of Schreyer's method to compute syzygies and compare it with other, more classical methods. Comparisons of the computing time of several examples in the system SINGULAR give hints as to which strategies should be used in different classes of examples.

Description / Table of Contents: Current carriers can cause currents after variation of the external electrical field, which depend on time just as relaxed dipols. The intensity and the position of the relaxation region and especially the nonlinear dependence between the stored charge and the external field are criterions for this. Blocking contacts cause relaxations of current carriers in poly(phenyl quinoxaline) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) samples. Detailed investigations of this phenomenon make possible informations on the density of the current carriers in the sample volume and on electrical properties of the contact region. Further ac-hopping is to be proved in poly(phenyl chinoxaline).

Description / Table of Contents: p-Vinylbenzophenone was obtained by GRIGNARD reaction from p-chlorostyrene and benzonitrile and was polymerized radically in bulk and copolymerized with styrene. The compositions of the copolymers with styrene were determined from the infrared spectra. The following monomer reactivity ratios for the radical copolymerization at 60°C. were found: r1 = 3.0 ± 0.3 (for p-vinylbenzophenone) and r2 = 0.18 ± 0.08 (for styrene).p-Vinyltriphenylcarbinol was obtained by GRIGNARD reaction from p-chlorostyrene and benzophenone or from p-vinylbenzophenone and phenylmagnesium bromide. It was polymerized radically in bulk and in benzene solution and copolymerized with styrene. The compositions of the copolymers were determined by photometrical analyses of the polymer p-vinyltriphenylmethyl-cations in conc. sulfuric acid. For the radical copolymerization of p-vinyltriphenyl-carbinol with styrene in benzene at 50°C. the following monomer reactivity ratios resulted: r1 = 1.60 ± 0.15 (for p-vinyltriphenyl-carbinol) and r2 = 0.47 ± 0.10 (for styrene).

Description / Table of Contents: The differentiation of electron and ion charge carriers is of principal importance for explaining the electrical properties of high polymer solids. Experimental methods enabling differentiation between electron and ion charge carrier transport are summarized and estimated, particularly mass transport (mass spectroscopy, neutron activation analysis and tracer technique) as direct methods as well as “internal” electrical effects (d.c. characteristics and dielectric measurements) and “external” electrical effects (electrochemical cell, electrode conditions, pressure dependence of conductivity, photoelectric effects) as indirect methods. The results obtained with various high-ohmic polymer solids are summarized and discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: TSD-spectra are measured after thermal and optical excitation at several values of polarizing field strength and intensity of light. An α-relaxation region is not evident by optical excitation. The β-relaxation region is observable, but it is superimposed by another relaxation region for greater polarizing field strength. By optical excitation further maxima are observed at temperatures higher than the temperature of the β-relaxation. They are interpreted by a trap mechanism. An identical space charge maximum exists for both the excitation processes.
