Notizen: Poly(benzobisthiazole)s containing an ortho-tetramethyl substituted biphenyl moiety were synthesized via the polycondensation of 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol dihydrochloride with 2,2′,6,6′-tetramethylbiphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid in poly(phosphoric acid) (PPA). The intrinsic viscosities of the tetramethylbiphenyl poly-(benzobisthiazole)s in chlorosulfonic acid at 30°C were in the range of 6.9-13.4 dL/g. Copolycondensation of 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol dihydrochloride with terephthalic acid and 2,2′,6,6′-tetramethylbiphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid was carried out as well by varying the ratio of the two dicarboxylic acid monomers in the reactant mixture. The homopolymers and copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Thermal stability of the polymers was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermogravimetric mass spectrum analysis (TG-MS). The tetramethylbiphenyl poly(benzobisthiazole)s were found to be more stable at elevated temperatures than the parent poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBZT). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: Heat treated poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBZT) fibers tested in tension result in two types of failure modes. In failure mode I, the fiber exhibits a relatively sharp break; mode II is characterized by significant axial fiber splitting. Approximately 20% of the fibers failed in mode II when tested at 2.54, 7.62, and 12.7 cm gage lengths. At 1.25 cm gage length all the fibers failed in mode I. Tensile strength decreased from the 1.25 to 7.62 cm gage length, but tensile strength of the fibers tested at 7.62 and 12.7 cm gage lengths were similar. The two failure mode observation is supported by the Weibull statistical distribution. Fiber tensile properties were also measured at 150°C. Axial compressive strength of the PBZT fibers as determined from the recoil test is also reported and is found to be independent of fiber tensile modulus and fiber diameter. As-received heat-treated fibers were post heat treated between 700 and 775°C. Structural changes in the fiber were studied using infrared spectroscopy, small and wide angle x-ray scattering, and swelling studies. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Nitric acid etching studies have been conducted on samples of commercially available highly oriented gel-spun polyethylene fibers: SpectraTM 900 and 1000 from AlliedSignal Inc. The results show that the acid attacks the fiber, increases crystallinity as observed by X-ray diffraction, increases the enthalpy of melting of unconstrained fibers by 13-25%, and removes topological constrains thus facilitating the crystallization of chain segments in the noncrystalline regions. The acid functionalizes the fiber, creating various oxygen and nitrogen-containing moieties, specifically (C=O)—,—C=C—, and —NO2 groups. The small weight loss upon etching, less than 2%, and the fact that fibers weaken but do not fragment suggests that the gel-spun and -drawn morphology is more resistant to acid attack than are other morphologies of polyethylene. Photomicroscopy shows that acid etching opens cracks normal to the fiber axis. That the acid can attack the gel-spun fibers indicates the presence of structural imperfections such as folds, molecular kinks, or uncrystallized regions within the fibers. Infrared analysis on virgin fibers shows the absence of absorption bands normally associated with the presence of chains lying within amorphous regions in polyethylene. These and other morphological features are integrated into a description of the structure of commercial gel-spun polyethylene fibers. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Rubber modified and unmodified poly(acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate) (75/25) copolymers [(Barex® resins) (Barex® is a registered trademark of Vistron Corporation, a subsidiary of The Standard Oil Company, Ohio)] were stretched at varying strain rates at different temperatures. Molecular orientation of the stretched samples at different extension ratios was determined using birefringence, the X-ray orientation factor, and infrared dichroism. The birefringence of rubber modified copolymers, which were prepared by graft copolymerization of the poly(acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate) copolymer with 10 parts (by weight) of a poly(butadiene/acrylonitrile) rubber, is found to be appreciably different as compared with the birefringence of unmodified poly(acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate) copolymer. The possible reasons for this difference are discussed. The orientation measured from the three techniques is compared, and the effects of temperature of stretching and of strain to are discussed. The maximum values of the birefringence of these two copolymers and that of the polyacrylonitrile have been estimated. Transition moment angles for CH2 and C≡N stretching bonds are obtained. From the birefringence data at various temperatures and strain rates, the activation energies of these two copolymers have been obtained.

Notizen: The effects of temperature, time of heat setting, and rate of cooling on the elastic modulus of free-and taut-annealed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers were determined at different time scales using Instron, Rheovibron, and pulse propagation meter. The correlation of the elastic modulus with structure is critically examined in terms of the widely used simple one-phase and two-phase models for fiber modulus. It is concluded that these simple models are not universally applicable.

Notizen: Viscoelastic parameters for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers heat set under different conditions were determined at 110 Hz between room temperature and about 200°C. The correlation of dynamic mechanical properties with structure and their dependence on the temperature of the measurement are discussed. It was found that in addition to the structural parameters such as degree of crystallinity, crystallite and amorphous orientation, etc., morphological factors such as size and distribution of crystallites also influence the dynamic mechanical properties. The activation energy of the α-transition is reported, and the effect of the distribution of relaxation times on the activation energy is discussed.

Notizen: We report structural changes in commercial multifilament poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) yarn when it is heat set in silicone oil over a range of temperatures between 100 and 220°C for times ranging from 1 min to 1 hr, while the yarn was (1) free to relax, and (2) held taut at constant length. In one case, viz., a sample heat treated for 1 hr, the cooling time was also varied to study the effect of rate of cooling. The free-annealed and taut-annealed samples showed considerable differences. The predominant role of the temperature of heat setting on structure is discussed in detail. There are considerable changes in the amount and orientation of the amorphous phase, and these will be shown to have important influence on mechanical properties in subsequent reports.

Notizen: The stress-strain characteristics of poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers, heat set under different conditions have been studied under tension, and mechanical properties such as tenacity, yield point, elongation at break, and work of rupture are presented and discussed. An attempt has been made to correlate these mechanical properties with structural parameters. The orientation of the molecules in the fiber and the size and distribution of the crystallites emerge as important factors controlling the tensile properties.

Notizen: Dynamic birefringence and dynamic mechanical studies have been done on (i) acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate copolymer and (ii) rubber-modified copolymer, in the frequency range of 0.06-5.55 Hz (acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate copolymer only at 0.92 Hz) and temperature range of -85 to +85°C. These studies were made on a computerized dynamic birefringence apparatus. A comparison of the dynamic birefringence and dynamic mechanical properties in the rubber-modified copolymer reveals a rubber glass transition peak, which is much more pronounced in dynamic birefringence data than in dynamic mechanical data. In addition to the glass transition of the rubber part in the rubber modified copolymer, there is a main transition of the copolymer in the vicinity of 80°C. Before the main transition there is a shoulder in the mechanical and optical loss curves. The reasons for the occurrence of the shoulder are discussed.

Notizen: Molecular motion in a polymeric system can be studied using dynamic birefringence. Computer interfacing of the dynamic birefringence apparatus and the data treatment using Fourier analysis are reported in this paper. Experiments are done under sinusoidal strain; stress, strain and birefringence signals are monitored. Birefringence is measured using the optical transmission technique. An AIM-65 microcomputer was interfaced with this apparatus for the purposes of data acquisition and data analysis. First-order Fourier coefficients are used to determine the real and imaginary components of the modulus, the strain optical coefficient, and the stress optical coefficient. Higher order Fourier coefficients can be used to study the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior in the polymer.
