    Notes: Thermal analysis of cotton samples grafted with triallylphosphate (TAP) and 2,2,2-tribromoethyl acrylate (TBEA) was carried out. Grafting of poly-TAP causes a significant decrease in the decomposition temperature of cotton. The cotton decomposition is acid catalyzed by H3PO4 formed during the decomposition of the grafted poly-TAP. The HBr evolved during decomposition was monitored continuously during thermal analysis of cotton grafted with poly-TBEA. No significant flame-retarding effect by HBr was found. Since grafted poly-TBEA causes a decrease in the decomposition temperature of cotton, it is suggested that the flame retardant mechanism for poly-TBEA in cotton occurs mainly in the solid phase before most of the HBr is released.

    Notes: Indirect methods for introducing sulfonate groups into polyethylene, using the preirradiation technique, were studied. One of the methods involved graft polymerization of 2,3-epoxypropyl acrylate into polyethylene followed by sulfonation of the epoxy ring with bisulfite. The hydroxy sulfonate thus obtained was unstable in an acid or base environment and hydrolyzed at the esteric bond. The second method involved hydrophylization of the polyethylene by forming a pregraft of polyacrylic acid or polyvinyl alcohol, followed by preirradiation grafting with sodium styrene sulfonate or, less successfully, with sodium vinyl sulfonate. The sulfonates thus obtained were resistant to acids and bases. The acid capacity, water absorption, and water permeability of the grafted films were determined.

    Notes: Omiderm (Omikron Scientific Ltd., Rehovot, Israel), a new synthetic wound covering based on hydrophilized polyurethane, was found to be highly permeable to water. Values in the region of 5000 g/m2 24 h were found for the water permeability of Omiderm in comparison to 1400 and 500 g/m2 24 h for Biobrane (Hall, Woodroof Inc., Santa Ana, CA) and Op site (Smith and Nephew Ltd.), respectively. Permeabilities of antibacterial agents through Omiderm were found to be two to three orders of magnitude greater than those through Biobrane. The in vitro effectiveness of various antibacterial agents in lowering bacterial growth of different bacterial strains when applied to seeded agar plates through Omiderm membrane was investigated. NBH ointment (1% Neomycin, 1% Bacitracin, and 0.5% Hydrocortisone) was found to be the most effective material in inhibiting bacterial growth, except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa where silver sulfadiazine was superior. In in vivo experiments bacterial counts of infected wounds covered with Omiderm and topically treated with NBH were lowered to less than 103 organism/g tissue after one day of treatment.
