    Notizen: The reaction of metallocenes with solutions of polydienes and halogenated polymers, under Friedel-Crafts conditions, has now been applied to the surface modification of solid polymer films. The reaction of ferrocene with chlorinated polyethylene films appears to proceed by a fast substitution step followed by a slower diffusion-controlled step. The stress-strain curves of surface-modified films, as well as of solution-cast polymetallocene films, have been examined by means of a bursting-strength apparatus. The weathering behavior of metallocene-modified polymers has been studied in both natural and accelerated conditions. Studies on the effect of ageing on composition and properties by spectrophotometric and mechanical measurements indicate that the photooxidative resistance of polymers is improved significantly by metallocene modification. Additionally, modified films have been found to be effective as clear shields for the protection of vulnerable substrates against photodegradation. The observed darkening of the irradiated films could be due to a thermal reaction between metallocene and photolytically generated macroperoxides.

    Notizen: Poly(ferrocenylene-methylmethylene) (PFMM) was prepared and subsequently crosslinked by the aid of either 1,1'-bis(α-hydroxyethyl)ferrocene or polyfunctional ferrocene polymers, containing reactive-CH2OH or-CH(CH3)OH groups. The thermal behavior of both the primary polymer and the thermoset was investigated. The solubility parameter of PFMM was determined and the degree of crosslinking was studied by solvent swelling and sol fraction measurements. Various thermosetting structural composites were prepared and subjected to mechanical testing.

    Notizen: The synthesis of ferrocene-containing polymers by chemical modification of chlorinated polyethylenes, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and other halogenated polymers, under Friedel-Crafts conditions, is described. The effect of reaction conditions on the structure and composition of the products obtained with various substrates was investigated. Soluble polymers of up to 62% ferrocene content were obtained. In most cases, substitution was accompanied by dehydrohalogenation. The ferrocene-to-vinylene ratio was higher in the reaction products of chlorinated polyethylenes than in those of PVC.

    Notizen: The phenanthrenechromium dicarbonyl moiety was anchored by a photosubstitution reaction onto commercial resins substituted by diphenylphosphine groups. From scanning electron microscope photographs it was found that, whereas the chloromethylation reaction proceeded homogeneously throughout the polymer beads, the phosphination and photochemical reactions behaved differently, depending on the macrostructure and the morphology of the polymer beads. Large pore size dimensions (1300 Å) allowed the reagents (phosphine and chromium complex) to react throughout the polymer beads, whereas small pore sizes (〈 50 Å) permitted penetration of the reagent only to a limited extent.

    Notizen: A process for the chemical modification of polybutadienes and natural rubber by various metallocene compounds is described. Soluble products of up to 43% ferrocene content were obtained. The effect of substrate, metallocene, and reaction conditions on the course and extent of substitution was investigated. The glass transition temperature Tg was found to increase considerably with the degree of substitution, e.g., cis-polybutadiene substituted with ferrocene (18 mole-%) has a Tg of 30°C, as compared with -91°C for the unsubstituted polymer.

    Notizen: The self-condensation of α-ferrocenylmethylcarbonium ion in nitroethane yielded polymers of Mn up to 20,000. The change of [η] and Mn with the reaction time indicated that the process consisted of a rapid primary growth stage, an induction period, a second growth stage, and a crosslinking stage. The [η]-Mn correlation for a series of polymeric fractions in the Mn = 0.1-7.2 × 104 range points to a highly branched structure.
