Notes: The structure of the nucleosome core particle in solution has been studied by neutron scattering using the full-contrast variation technique, which reduces the experimental spectra to three fundamental scatter functions holding information on shape and structure. Systematic calculations of the fundamental scatter functions expected from proposed core-particle models have been compared with the observed functions and show that the neutron-scattering criteria severely restrict the number of models which can be valid for the structure in solution. The best model for the core particle in solution has a hydrophobic histone core about which 1.7 ± 0.1 turns of DNA are wrapped at a pitch between 3.0 and 3.5 nm. This core contains most of the histone and has an average thickness of 4 nm and diameter 6.4-7.5 nm. While solution scattering is not able to specify uniquely the actual shape of the core to high resolution, all models which are possible for the shape of the core to a resolution justified by the data have been considered. It is clear that cylindrical or wedge shapes compatible with the above dimensions are valid structures. A hole probably penetrates the histone core, but the data do not allow a diameter greater than 1 nm. Available evidence suggests that about a quarter of the total histone is outside the core.

Notes: CD measurements were made for calmodulin and its calcium (Ca2+) complexes at different ionic strengths and Ca2+ concentrations. Calmodulin at an ionic strength of 0.00M and in the absence of Ca2+ exists as an α-helical protein with a negligible amount of β-sheet. An increase in ionic strength, whether or not Ca2+ is present, increases α-helix at the expense of “other” (coil) structure. The changes in β-sheet and β-turns are insignificant. Binding of Ca2+ at low ionic strength occurs in stages with at least one folding intermediate before attaining the final stable state. Binding of Ca2+ at an ionic strength of 0.165M causes only a slight increase in α-helix, so that the secondary structure of the protein depends on ionic strength and is insensitive to the nature of the cation (i.e., Ca2+). Thus, the activation of calmodulin by Ca2+ must be due to a structural reorientation rather than to a major secondary structural alteration. The CD estimation of secondary structure with 4 mol Ca2+/calmodulin (61% α-helix, 2% antiparallel β-sheet, 2% parallel β-sheet, 21% β-turns, and 14% other) is in excellent agreement with the x-ray results.

Notes: Work on two sheet organosilicon polymers, one derived from the mineral chrysotile and the other from the mineral apophyllite, is described. This work provides direct evidence that both these polymers are composed of sheets. In addition, it shows that in the chrysotile-derived polymer the sheets curl into scrolls, and that in the apophyllite-derived polymer the sheets are essentially flat.

Notes: Curie-point pyrolysis mass spectrometry (Py-MS) and direct probe pyrolysis high resolution mass spectrometry (Py-HRMS) were used to identify the components and additives used in the synthesis and compounding of Biomer, Lycra Spandex, Tecoflex, and Pellethane. Two types of Biomer were identified (P and Q, our notation) which are composed of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) capped with 4,4′-methylenebis(phenylisocyanate) (MDI) and chain-extended with ethylenediamine (EDA). Both forms contain 4,4′-butylidene-bis-(6-t-butyl-m-cresol) antioxidant, and Biomer Q also contains an additive which appears to be a quaternary ammonium chloride salt. Lycra Spandex was found to be identical to Biomer Q, with the exception that a low molecular weight polydimethylsiloxane oil is also present. This silicone oil can be removed by solvent extraction. Tecoflex (type SG80A) is composed of PTMG capped with 4,4′-diisocyanatodicyclohexylmethane and extended with 1,4-butanediol (BD). An industrial grade and a medical grade of Pellethane were analyzed. Both were composed of PTMG capped with MDI and extended with 1,4-butanediol. the industrial grade also contains an antioxidant, possibly butylated diphenylamine.

Notes: The functionalized polyethylene acrylic acid copolymers Primacor 1430 (P1430, containing 9.5% acrylic acid) and Primacor 5980 (P5980, containing 20% acrylic acid) have been used to synthesize gold/polymer dispersions and gold/polymer ionomers, respectively. When [Ph3PAu]+ is bonded directly to the carboxylate, work-up of the polymer leads to decarboxyation and metallic gold formation. However, ionic bonding of [(Ph3P)2Au]+, and related bis phosphine cations produce workable, foamable polymers. Analysis shows samples from these reactions to contain between 4-15 wt % of Au depending on the type of gold complex used and the reaction conditions. The gold/polymer (ionomer) sample with about 12% Au has been worked to mold sheets of foam. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description / Table of Contents: Welding in Tank and Plant ConstructionSince a relatively limited number of plastics types are used, the welding tasks involved in chemical apparatus engineering can be accomplished with just a few welding techniques are well-known and welding can be carried out efficiently, reliably and economically by this means. In this respect, however, a number of important principles have to be observed. The DVS guidelines provide vital information on questions relating to calculation, design, personnel, equipment, material and testing. Extrusion welding enjoys prime importance as regards quality and economic aspects.

Description / Table of Contents: Long-term Strength of Welded Joints in Polyethylene Water Proofing Sheets for Refuse DumpsWaterproofing of refuse dumps is nowadays mainly carried out with sheets made from HDPE. Welding is the technique used for joining the sheets. These welded joints are the weakest point in the system. Whereas non-destructive tests give relatively little information on the quality of the weld, peel and tenside creep tests provide a good degree of differentation. The test results available show that it is not so much the welding technique that influences long-term strength, but that it is the creep strength of the base material and the excessive rise in stress due to notch effects at the changes in cross-section which determine the long-term quality of the welded joint.
