Notes: The important role of zinc oxide in accelerated rubber vulcanization has not been throughly defined. One major void in the investigations reported has been the absence of a suitable analytical method for following the rate of disappearance of zinc oxide. A method based on x-ray diffractometry is here presented for the direct determination of zinc oxide in rubber vulcanizates. The technique employed is rapid and nondestructive and has a relative error less than ±10% of the amount of zinc oxide present. Application to typical accelerated rubber vulcanizates has shown that the rate of zinc oxide disappearance was independent of the amount and type of reinforcing filler. It was found also to be independent of the degree of crosslinking despite the known dependence of high level crosslink formation on the presence of zinc oxide in this type of curing system. The major part of the reacted zinc oxide appeared as zinc sulfide.

Notes: The effect of antirads on the gamma radiation yields of scission in black loaded natural rubber stocks has been studied. The yield of chain scission has been measured by stress relaxation methods. The antirads were found to decrease the rate of chain scission, both in air and under nitrogen, with the antirad effectiveness being greater in the former case. The presence of oxygen accelerated the radiation induced chain scission. These results may be explained if it is assumed that (1) RO2 · radicals lead to chain scission more readily than do R · radicals, and (2) RO2 · radicals react with antirads leading to stabilized products more readily than do R · radicals.

Notes: A mathematical model is presented to describe the monomer transport between monomer droplets, aqueous phase, and polymer particles during the course of an emulsion polymerization. The model was used to investigate the role of the cosurfactant (hexadecane) in the miniemulsion copolymerization of 50:50 molar ratio vinyl acetate-butyl acrylate monomer mixture, as well as the effect of the different components and process variables on the rate of copolymerization, monomer distribution between phases, and composition of the copolymer.

Notes: Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), produced from glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) was catalytically oxidized using diaphorase and 1, 4-benzoquinone to yield 1, 4-hydroquinone. This benzoquinone redox mediator was readily detected at an electrode polarized at +0.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) so avoiding the high overpotentials required for a direct electrochemical measurement of NADH. Also, the lipophilic nature of the hydroquinone enabled a novel high selectivity plasticized PVC membrane mounted over the electrode to be exploited. The mediator/PVC combination achieved NADH calibration linear up to at least 100 μM. When used to assay G6PDH activity, a linear calibration from 0.1-1.0 U/mL was produced. The detection system offers the possibility of highly selective measurement of dehydrogenase enzyme activity in biological samples without sample preparation and could provide the basis for simplified homogeneous immunoassays as well as dehydrogenase amperometric enzyme electrodes.

Notes: A film, prepared from the copolymer of vinylidene cyanide/vinyl acetate, was stretched at 145°C. in a silicone oil bath using a draw ratio of one to three. The x-ray diffraction data indicated that some orientation had occurred during the stretching process. In the stretched film the copolymer chains are separated by a distance of 5.86 A. This lateral chain spacing lies between those values reported for Orlon and polyvinyl acetate. Along the fiber axis of the vinylidene cyanide/vinyl acetate copolymer film, a high degree of disorder exists. As the temperature of stretching decreased from 165 to 145°C., the degree of orientation increased slightly. Amorphous patterns were observed for the films which were stretched in air immediately after being removed from oil baths at 187 and 220°C.

Notes: The changes in relative unsaturation of the monomer-polymer system of diallyl phthalate have been studied by means of the infrared absorption hand at 1645 cm.-1 over the temperature range of 60-120° both before and after gelation. It was found that the initial reaction can be described in terms of second-order kineties with an activation energy of 15,900 cal./mole. Relationships have been derived for (a) the dependence of the relative unsaturation u/u0 on the degree of conversion α, and (b) the relationship among α, time, temperature, and catalyst concentration. The value of α at the critical point determined in the above manner is in good agreement with the theory but appears to he temperature-dependent; possible reasons for this dependency are given. It is pointed out that the infrared technique is a suitable method for study of post-gelation kinetics and polymer structure.

Notes: Butadiene-styrene copolymers have been prepared at subfreezing temperatures by means of redox recipes employing inorganic salts as freezing point depressants. Specific salt-emulsifier combinations are required for optimum rates of polymerizations. With a sufficient amount of the inorganic salt to lower the freezing point of water 10°C., the sodium chloride-potassium caprylate combination resulted in a 60% conversion in 4.6 hours, the calcium chloride-sodium hexyl sulfate combination resulted in a 41% conversion in 24 hours, and the calcium chloride-alkyl aryl polyether alcohol combination resulted in a 58% conversion in 18.5 hours.Low molecular weight mercaptans such as tert-butyl mercaptan can be employed as practical modifiers for this recipe.Certain of the physical properties of the salt antifreeze copolymers prepared at -10°C. are superior to those of copolymers prepared at the same temperature by means of conventional recipes. The ease of processing and the heat-aged properties are exceptional. One copolymer after 24 hours of aging at 100°C. withstood 118,000 flexures before a puncture increased to one inch in length at 99°C. The superiority of the product is attributed to the precipitation of the copolymer during the course of the polymerization.
