Notes: The dimensional stability of molded thermoplastic articles is a function of the extent to which stresses are frozen into them on molding. The kind and amount of plasticizer included in the material to be molded may be varied to minimize the amount of these stresses. Methods of obtaining fundamental information about polymer-plasticizer systems from simple measurements of viscosity and osmotic pressure are suggested in this paper, and some results for cellulose derivatives are given.

Notes: The order and molecular dynamics of wholly aromatic thermotropic copolyesters prepared from hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), hydroquinone (HQ) and phenoxyterephthalic acid (Ph-O-TPA) have been studied by X-ray analysis and deuteron NMR spectroscopy of specimens containing either deuterated hydroquinone or deuterated phenoxy side-chain units. X-ray analysis shows the coexistence of nematic and three-dimensionally ordered regions that are characterized by registry of adjacent chains with interleaved side groups. The molecular motions in these nematic/three-dimensionally ordered polymers are compared to those of a highly crystalline copolyester prepared from deuterated TPA and HQ. In the fast motional limit the motion in the crystalline system is characterized by 180° flips about the TPA axis, whereas in the nematic/three-dimensionally ordered copolyester the same type of axially symmetric spectrum is observed for both the nematic and the three-dimensionally ordered regions. The motion of the HQ units is characterized by rotational diffusion about the C1—C4 axis, augmented by fast rotational fluctuation of this axis about the main-chain direction. A model of free rotation about the axis of the phenyl group augmented by librations of restricted amplitude about the PhO-TPA bond for the ordered regions superimposed by slow axial motions about the main-chain axis in the nematic phase is consistent with both the NMR data and X-ray analysis.

Notes: A new technique for quantifying the amount of multimolecular microgel material in water-soluble polymers is described. The enhanced velocity of the large microgels during flow through a 25 μm capillary is the basis for a separation between the microgels and dissolved polymer. With the use of laser-excited fluorescence detection, the arrival of fluorescently-tagged polyacrylamide samples at a downstream location is recorded. The presence of small amounts of microgel has a deleterious effect on the ability to filter polymer solutions. Analysis of samples before and after filtration suggests that a significant amount of microgel material above 8 μm in diameter is present in samples that exhibit poor filterability characteristics. Treatment of a sample with base is found to improve filterability and to decrease the amount of microgel in the sample.

Notes: A few-monolayer zwitterionic, non-centrosymmetric Langmuir-Blodgett film has been sandwiched between two electrodes, one of which is transparent. Curves of dark current density as a function of applied bias were observed to exhibit rectifier-like behaviour and to follow closely the dependences measured from junctions using two metallic electrodes. The transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode discussed here permitted illumination of the organic film during electrical characterisation and it was observed that the electrical behaviour was altered from the dark state. Illumination has the effect of generating a photocurrent even when no bias is applied to the electrodes; in addition, the junction conductance was increased. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Metal 1 | C16H33-Q3CNQ LB film | metal 2 structures exhibiting asymmetric, non-linear I/V characteristics have been fabricated using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique with LB film thicknesses as small as a single monolayer. When such junctions are subjected to low biases, the I/V traces exhibit little or no asymmetry, but as the applied biases increase, so the I/V asymmetry becomes more evident. The largest applied voltages before breakdown are of the order of 1 V, which represents an E-field of order 108 V m-1. This breakdown under high biases increases the junction conductance and the I/V traces become very noisy. More interestingly, it has been observed that after such breakdown it is possible for the junction to recover on reduction of the bias. It is observed that recovery is not always immediate and may require several voltage sweeps. A subsequent increase in bias will cause breakdown at the same bias as the first breakdown, indicating that no permanent damage has been caused.

Notes: In the field of molecular scale electronics the drive is towards the fabrication of self-assembled, organic, nanoscale architectures which will have an active role to play in novel electronic devices. As a formative step towards this goal the creation of an organic analogue to the p-n junction was proposed by Aviram and Ratner in the 1970s. In their proposal a monomolecular layer of a charge transfer species controls current flow between a pair of metal electrodes, allowing easy flow for only one polarity of the applied voltage. Such metal/molecular layer/metal structures have now been fabricated, utilising the self-ordering properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films to form the organic layer, with one dimension of the device being reduced to the molecular scale. The fabrication techniques involved in the generation of these M/LB/M junctions are now described along with the present understanding of conduction mechanisms through such nanoscale thickness junctions. These structures clearly show that the organic molecular layers can control current passage in electronic devices emulating some of the characteristics of an inorganic semiconducting p-n junction.

Notes: Analogs of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were synthesized and screened as bronchodilators with the ultimate goal of enhancing the potency and extending the duration of action of the native peptide. Several design approaches were applied to the problem. First, the amino acid residues required for receptor binding and activation were identified. A model of the active pharmacophore was developed. With knowledge of the secondary structure (NMR) of the peptide, various analogs were synthesized to stabilize α-helical conformations. Having achieved a level of enhanced bronchodilator potency, our approach then concentrated on identification of the sites of proteolytic degradation and synthesis of metabolically-stable analogs. Two primary cleavage sites on the VIP molecule were identified as the amide bonds between Ser25-Ile26 and Thr7-Asp8. This information was used to synthesize cyclic peptides which incorporated disulfide and lactam ring structures. Analog work combined the best multiple-substitution sites with potent cyclic compounds which resulted in identification of a cyclic lead peptides. This compound, Ro 25-1553, exhibited exceptionally high potency, metabolic stability, and a long duration of action and may be an effective therapeutic for the treatment of bronchospastic diseases. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The optical modes of DNA that displace one strand against the other are modeled by the motion of an oscillator in an asymmetric quartic double-well potential whose minima represent the A- and B-conformations. Assuming that the variation of the polarizability during vibration derives mainly from the tilting of the base rings relative to the helix axis, the total polarizability tensor is shown to possess approximately ellipsoidal symmetry and to depend nonlinearly on the instantaneous displacement of the two strands. The Raman spectrum of a collection of randomly oriented molecules is calculated. It consists of one or more peaks with characteristic shape. The depolarization ratio is 3/4, independent of molecular conformation and frequency. The results are discussed in the light of existing experimental and theoretical information.

Notes: The mechanoelastic behavior of calf pericardium employed in cardiac bioprostheses was compared with that of three types of thread (Nylon, Prolene, and silk) used to suture this biological tissue. The elastic limit (EL) of each material was determined by means of tensile tests and the mathematical functions that govern the stress/strain curves within the EL have been described. The first derivative of these functions for each point to the curves allowed the immediate calculation of the elastic modulus (EM), which was considered the best parameter for comparing the elasticities of the materials being assessed. It was observed that the deformation of the pericardium produced by the working stress of a pericardial leaflet was approximately 1000 times greater than that produced in the surgical threads. When the elasticities were compared on the basis of the EM, that of pericardium was 749.06, 626.95, and 1253.17 times greater than that of the Nylon, Prolene, and silk suture threads, respectively. These results demonstrate that the interaction between these materials (pericardium and the threads) could be generating detrimental forces that can diminish the durability of the leaflets of the bioprostheses constructed of calf pericardium. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
