    Notes: The anionic polymerization of isoprene with n-butyl lithium and polar modifier such as TMEDA and tripiperdinophosphine oxide were studied and kinetic and reactor models are proposed for these systems. Reactor conversion, molecular weight distribution and polymer glass transition temperature had been calculated from the model and compared favorably to the actual data for various combinations of reactor systems and operating conditions. Simulations of the model can be used to design reactor systems and predict polymer properties of large-scale operations from results of small scale batch reactor runs.

    Notes: Polyurethane systems based on aliphatic diisocyanates were evaluated for suitability for use as underwater transducer encapsulants. A preliminary evaluation was performed to select the most promising urethane systems for further development. An investigation was then undertaken to determine the effect of compositional changes on the properties of these urethanes. The compositional parameters investigated were the soft-segment molecular weight, the prepolymer isocyanate content, the composition of the cure formulation, and the cure stoichiometry. These urethanes were subjected to long-term aging in seawater. It was found that this exposure did not significantly effect the physical or dynamic mechanical properties of the urethane.

    Notes: The anionic solution polymerization of butadiene was studied employing both batch and continuous reactor operations with n-butyllithium (n-BuLi) initiator, tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) modifier, and hexane solvent. A model was proposed that described the kinetics as a function of both the fully modified and unmodified regressed rate data. Using the proposed kinetic model, the conversion, vinyl structure, and heterogeneity index of polymers produced for a series of continuous runs were successfully predicted. The model was used to simulate several process configurations.

    Notes: The miscibility of two-component polymer blends has been investigated using xenon-129 (129Xe) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to probe the phase morphology. The chemical shift of 129Xe dissolved in a given polymer is unique, thus heterogeneous blends with large domain sizes exhibit two 129Xe NMR lines. When a single resonance is obtained, the data are consistent with miscibility, yielding an upper bound on the domain size. The temperature dependence of the relative solubilities and chemical shifts of 129Xe dissolved in the pure components may allow a determination of the phase morphology in blends exhibiting a single resonance. The method is used to demonstrate that polychloroprene and 25% epoxidized 1,4-polyisoprene form a miscible blend.

    Notes: The polymerization in solution of a variety of water-soluble monomers with a variety of water-soluble redox initiators is described and a detailed study is reported on the polymerization, in aqueous solution, of methyl vinyl ketone and of methyl methacrylate under the influence of potassium sulfate-silver nitrate. Keeping the persulfate concentration constant and varying the silver nitrate or, conversely, keeping the silver nitrate constant and varying the persulfate, it is found that, except at very high concentration of catalyst, both the rate of polymerization and the molecular weight of the polymer bear a linear relation to the square root of the catalyst concentration, in harmony with the general theory of catalyzed bulk and emulsion polymerization. The molecular weight of the polymer formed diminishes with increase in the temperature of polymerization. The study of redox polymerization in water, without emulsifier, has been extended to the case of a mixture of a water-soluble and a water-insoluble monomer, and it has been found that copolymerization proceeds at a reasonable rate and frequently forms a stable latex. The copolymerization of styrene and 5 or 10 per cent of its weight of methacrylonitrile in water under the influence of a water-soluble persulfate-bisulfite redox pair has been examined with some closeness. Polymerization is apparently initiated in the aqueous solution, since, contrary to the state of affairs in emulsion polymerization, water-soluble retarders are more effective than oil-soluble ones, when the retarder is added at the outset. If the retarder is added at a later stage of polymerization, oil-soluble reagents are more effective than water-soluble ones. The water-soluble monomer enters into the polymer at a greater rate than the water-insoluble one, but it appears that, even at the earliest stage at which it is practicable to take samples co-polymerization occurs. The influence of catalyst concentration on the rate of polymerization, the molecular weight of the polymer, and the latex particle size was examined.

    Notes: This study was conducted to investigate some fundamental fatigue testing variables as they apply to the response characteristics of acrylic bone cement. Cyclic loading under load control was conducted at frequencies of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 Hz in air at room temperature. At a tensile stress range of 0.3-20.0 MPa the fatigue life increased linearly with logarithmic frequency. The effect of conditioning and testing in saline at both room temperature and 37°C at similar stress levels and a frequency of 10 Hz were also examined. When compared to dry testing at room temperature, testing in saline at 37°C resulted in a reduction in fatigue life while testing in saline at room temperature produced an increase in fatigue life. Of a number of statistical distributions considered, the Weibull was found to be the most appropriate in documenting the findings of this investigation. A companion fractographic investigation of the failure surfaces demonstrated distinct regions of crack growth and fast fracture.
