Notes: Blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) with styrene/acrylonitrile (SAN), with styrene/maleic anhydride (SMA), and with styrene/acrylic acid (SAA) copolymers were examined for glass transition and lower critical solution temperature behavior. These copolymers were found to be completely miscible with PVME at levels of 3% or less of AA; below 10-11% AN, and below 15% MA (w%). Small amounts of the comonomers raised the temperature at which blends with PVME undergo phase separation on heating. This effect was greatest in the order AA 〉 AN 〉 MA. An interpretation of these results is given in terms of recent theories for homopolymer-copolymer blends, and the extent to which solubility parameter theory can be useful is considered.

Notes: Many polymers suffer from excessive heat generation during processing due to high viscosity, and reduction of viscosity is desired to control the melt temperature during processing. The concept of solid solvent was recently proposed based on thermally reversible compatibility between a polymer-additive pair. Benzenesulfonamide was found to be virtually a perfect solid solvent for polystyrene, and this finding clearly proves that solid solvents can be used as processing aid for polymers to effectively reduce the viscosity.

Notes: A computational algorithm for the detailed simulation of a batch emulsion polymerization reactor is discussed. The model is applied to the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, and the model predictions are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data. Further computations show the influence of reactor operating conditions on the polymer product and the reactor performance.

Notes: A polynomial subdistribution method for analyzing the correlation profile in photon correlation spectroscopy of polymer solutions is described. This method generates a continuous distribution function from the measured photoelectron time-correlation function, which can be related to particle size or molecular weight distribution of solute. The method is tested using simulated data for unimodal and bimodal distributions and compared with cumulant and histogram methods, respectively. The polynomial subdistribution method has an advantage in that it not only generates a continuous distribution curve but also works well for bimodal distributions whose peaks are close together.

Notes: The effect of stereoregularity on gas permeation properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was investigated. The gas permeability coefficients for He, H2, O2, N2, Ar, CH4, and CO2 at 35°C near atmospheric pressure have been measured for three different PMMAs. Apparent diffusion and solubility coefficients were obtained from time lag data, and these were compared with data for a commercial PMMA previously reported. The permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients increase as the content of syndiotactic sequences increases. These observations are consistent with more dense packing of the isotactic form in the glassy state that stems in part from its lower glass transition temperature. The transport behavior for a 50:50 isotactic/syndiotactic blend was also studied. These so-called stereocomplexes exhibit permeation behavior comparable to other weakly interacting miscible blend systems.
