Notes: Diffusion coefficients of camphorquinone (CQ) and its photoproduct (CQP) in two poly(methyl metbacrylate) (PMMA) samples with different molecular weights are measured as a function of temperature. Above the glass transition, the temperature dependence is not Arrhenius and can be described by the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. It is also shown that the difference in the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients of CQ in the two PMMA samples is attributable to the difference in glass transition temperatures.

Notes: The nonlinear susceptibilities (χ(2)33, χ(2)31), and the refractive index anisotropy, of a main chain accordion polymer, BCSC (see the text for the complete chemical formula), have been measured by the techniques of second harmonic generation (SHG) and waveguiding. A large birefringence, which is induced in the BCSC film by the spin-coating process, is almost removed by electric field poling. Our results demonstrate the fundamental difference between the birefringence associated with quadrupolar orientational order and the dipolar order associated with SHG. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Probe diffusion of camphorquinone, thymoquinone, and diacetyl in polymers was studied by the laser-induced holographic grating relaxation (HGR) technique in polymers. The effects of changing the probe size and various parameters of the polymer, such as the molecular weight, chain conformation, and the glass transition temperature, on the probe diffusion coefficient have been investigated. Furthermore, effects of cross-linking and plasticizing the chains of the polymer host on the probe diffusion coefficient were also studied. Temperature-dependent studies show that except for the very low molecular weight poly(methyl methacrylate), all probe diffusion coefficient data above the glass transition temperature fit well to the WLF equation. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The surface excitation parameter, which describes the influence of surface excitations by electrons for the vacuum side in electron spectroscopies, has been calculated for electrons of 200-2000 eV energies crossing surfaces of Cu, Ag, Au, Fe, Pd, Ni, MgO and SiO2. These calculations were performed for both incident and escaping electrons by the use of dielectric response theory. Spatially varying differential inverse mean free paths for surface excitations as a function of electron distance from the surface were found. The results showed that small differences existed in the surface excitation parameter among different metals but large differences occurred between metals and semiconductors or insulators. Calculated surface excitation parameters were fitted very well to a simple formula, i.e. Ps=aE-b, where Ps is the surface excitation parameter and E is the electron energy. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Plasma polymerization of tetra fluoroethylene (TFE), perfluoro-2-butyl-tetrahydrofuran (PFBTHF), ethylene, and styrene were investigated in various combinations of monomer flow rates and discharge wattages for the substrate temperature range of -50 to 80°C. The polymer deposition rates can be generally expressed by k0 = Ae-bt, where k0 is the specific deposition rate given by k0 = (deposition rate)/(mass flow rate of monomer), A is the preexponential factor representing the extrapolated value of k0 at zero absolute temperature, and b is the temperature-dependence coefficient. It was found that the value of b is not dependent on the condensibility of monomer but depends largely on the group of monomer; that is, perfluorocarbons versus hydrocarbons. The values of A are dependent on domains of plasma polymerization. In the energy deficient region A is given by A = α(W/FM)n, where α is the proportionality constant, W is discharge wattage, FM is the mass flow rate, and n is close to unity. In the monomer deficient region A becomes a constant. The kinetic equation is discussed in view of the bicyclic rapid step-growth polymerization mechanisms.

Notes: Plasma activation is a method that takes the advantage of low temperature plasma to immobilize the bioactive materials. An active immobilized glucose oxidase membrane was obtained via plasma-initiated polymerization of acrylic acid. The obtained immobilized enzyme is very active and stable. After 100 tests, the response error of the glucose sensor is less than 5% and its linear detecting range is 0-300 ppm. A hydrophilic PP film treated by Ar or NH3 plasma was used for the preparation of the immobilized glucose oxidase membrane. The obtained immobilized enzyme is also very active and stable. After 180 tests, the response error of the glucose sensor is less than 4% and its linear detecting range is 0-300 ppm. Furthermore, SEM was used to study the mophology of the glucose oxidase membranes obtained via both methods. And ESCA was used to analyze the plasm-initiated polymerization products and the plasma-treated PP films so as to obtain the optimum conditions for the immobilization of bioactive materials.

Notes: An experimental study of the relationships between foaming variables and foamed structures of expanded ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM) is reported. The study was carried out using EPDM composition containing azobisformamide blowing agent. The compositions were expanded and cured in hot air into a foamed structure consisting of dense skin and foamed core. The results showed that the foam density, skin thickness, average cell size, and number of cells of the expanded rubbers can be controlled closely by the foaming variables such as residence time, foaming temperature, and blowing agent concentration.

Notes: Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of polyurethanes and epoxies were prepared by the simultaneous technique. Modifications of the polymer structures resulted in a series of IPNs exhibiting semimiscible behavior, as evidenced by broad glass transitions in the dynamic mechanical spectra. Since this indicates materials with potentially good sound attenuation properties as a function of temperature and frequency, foams were prepared from these IPN systems. Enhanced sound absorption occurred in these foams when measured using the impedance tube method.

Notes: The dynamic viscoelastic properties and thermal transition behavior of reaction injection molding (RIM) and cast polyurethane - isocyanurate elastomers have been studied as a function of various segments (soft and hard urethane, and hard isocyanurate) content. RIM and cast elastomers were prepared at different concentrations of soft and hard urethane, and hard isocyanurate segments. RIM elastomers with the higher isocyanate index (lower hard urethane and greater isocyanurate segment content) displayed an unchanged Tg (glass transition temperature of soft segment) and increasing Tgh (glass transition temperature of hard segment) related to the hard urethane and isocyanurate segments. This is due to the phase separation between the soft and the hard segments. Cast elastomers synthesized from the higher amount of 1,4-butanediol (greater hard urethane and less hard isocyanurate segment content) showed an increasing Tgs, decreasing Tgh of hard urethane segments, and an unchanged Tgh of isocyanurate segments. This is related to the phase mixing between the soft and the hard urethane segments and the phase separation of hard isocyanurate and hard urethane segments.

Notes: Brillouin scattering spectra of poly(vinylidene fluoride) films subject to stretching have been studied as a function of draw (stretch) ratios. The longitudinal sound velocity is found to be isotropic for the unoriented film, but as the film is stretched, the velocity along the direction of stretch becomes higher than that perpendicular to it. The increase in the sound velocity is due to the induced orientation of the chains in the amorphous and the crystalline regions. The Hermans orientation parameter has been determined as a function of stretch from the velocity data. The result indicates the occurrence of recrystallization and reorganization as a result of transformation to form I crystallites from the amorphous phase as the film is stretched.
