Notes: The heptane solubility of polypropylene yarns prepared under a variety of experimental conditions from several molecular weight ranges of polymers has been examined. The heptane solubilities of the yarns have been found to vary over a wide range, depending upon the conditions of extrusion during fiber formation and the subsequent degree of orientation of the fibers. The solubility of the yarns increases with higher spinning temperatures presumably as a function of the formation of low molecular weight soluble fractions formed as a result of thermal degradation. A reduction in the solubility occurs as the yarns are oriented either during the winding operation or by subsequent drawing. The reduced solubility has been explained on the basis of increased molecular alignment thereby promoting increased crystallinity as well as the possible entrapment of normally soluble atactic polymer. The fact that the polymer solubility can be decreased by bringing the polymer to a higher state of crystallinity has been shown by annealing studies. The solubilities of the original polymers, therefore, exhibit little correlation with the yarns produced from them. The solubilities of the annealed polymers, however, more closely approach the values obtained for the highly oriented yarns.

Notes: Proton spin-lattice relaxation experiments on the bis-(p-toluenesulfonate) of 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol (TSHD) as a function of temperature (25 to 353 K), of frequency (22 and 44 MHz), and of conversion to polymer were performed to determine the molecular motions in this crystal and to follow the conversion via the changes in the relaxation time T1. It was found that T1 is dominated below 125 K by weakly hindered (ΔE = 2.8 kJ/mole) tunneling (Λ = 220 MHz) CH3 groups, at about 160 K by order-disorder fluctuations around the phase-transition temperature ϑc which depends strongly on the conversion, and above 200 K by the motion of the whole side group. T1 can be used as sensitive probe for the conversion: The change in T1 at about 44 K is directly proportional to the conversion, whereas the change at high temperatures (e.g., 353 K) occurs essentially at low conversions (≤10%). This is explained by distorted (stressed) areas around the isolated polymer chains, which are estimated to be about 16 times the size of the chains. After an induction period the stresses are relieved by further polymerization.

Description / Table of Contents: At dispergation of PVC particles in plasticizers border layers are formed which result from swelling of the microdomain structure at the surface of the latex particles by solvatations of chain ends and loops and from the formation of electrical double layers. These border layers enlarge the effective hydrodynamic volume of the particles. The properties of the layers can be varied within large limits.

Description / Table of Contents: The size distribution of primary PVC particles is shown to affect essentially the flow characteristics of plastisols. Due to the different molecular composition of PVC in larger and smaller particles the particle size affects also thermal stability.

Description / Table of Contents: A new kinetic model for describing the emulsion polymerization of monomers inclining to chain transfer is suggested, based on diffusion and probability concepts. Expressions allowing to calculate the average amount of radicals per particle, radical concentration in the aqueous phase, kinetic chain length and reformation of particles are presented.
