Abstract Following the development of Good Laboratory Practices for the conduct of experimental studies on chemical safety, there have been various initiatives to develop standards of Good Epidemiological Practices for observational studies in human populations. There have been four proposals from established groups, and an international ad hoc group assembled by companies interested in epidemiology has produced proposals. The scope and style of the five proposals and their detailed contents were reviewed and found to differ considerably. From this analysis it is possible to deduce the scope and content of more comprehensive proposals. It is recommended that there be further discussions within suitable international fora to progress towards an international consensus.
