Summary The contents of γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) and NH3 were measured in rabbit brains frozen in situ in liquid oxygen. Determinations of GABA were performed by use of an amino acid analyzer. Mean values obtained under normal conditions were for GABA 1.14 and for NH3 0.27 μmol/g fresh weight. During 30 and 60 min of hypoxia (respiration with 4% O2, 5% CO2, 91% N2) the concentration of GABA increased to 1.38 and 1.62 μmol/g, while NH3 rose to 0.62 and 0.95 μmol/g, respectively. After 20 min of ischaemia the mean values for GABA and NH3 were found to be 2.14 and 0.95 μmol/g, respectively.
