Abstract The rotatory strengths of the metal-to-ligand transitions observed in the spectrum of the complex ion (−)-Fe(phen) 3 +2 have been calculated theoretically. The excited electronic states were characterized using a coupled chromophore model. The calculated rotatory strengths are higher than the corresponding experimental values by a factor of about four.
