    Notes: Summary Tuberosum x Tuberosum families and Tuberosum x long-day adapted Andigena families are compared with each other and with their parents using multivariate analyses. The Tuberosum x Tuberosum families, representative of those used in present-day breeding programs, have lower mean tuber weights, marketable yields and total yields than their parents, and a trend towards the Andigena clones which represent their putative ancestors. The Tuberosum x Andigena families are superior to the Tuberosum x Tuberosum families in total yield and tuber number, but have reduced tuber size, later maturity and more persistent stolons. The characteristics of the Andigena parents dominate the inter-Group hybrids. The multivariate analyses facilitate the identification of superior hybrid families and superior parents. The results are discussed in the context of further Andigena selection, cytoplasmic male sterility, and reciprocal differences in inter-Group hybrid families. Future breeding strategies are proposed.

    Notes: Abstract  The potato cultivar ’Shepody’ is susceptible to a number of potato viruses including potato virus Y (PVY, potyvirus) but was found to possess extreme resistance to another potyvirus, potato virus A (PVA). ’Shepody’ plants were resistant to PVA infection in manual and graft inoculations. PVA replication was not detected in any of the inoculated plants by ELISA, an infectivity assay and RT-PCR. However, ’Shepody’ plants grafted with shoots containing PVA developed a novel symptomology which resembled a virus infection in appearance and in rate of translocation to the entire plant. Efforts to transmit the symptom-inducing agent manually failed. Graft-inoculation to potato virus indicator plants and PVA-susceptible potato plants showed that the symptom inducer was PVA at an extremely low concentration, detected using RT-PCR followed by Southern blot assay. Tubers from grafted but resistant ’Shepody’ plants had necrotic surfaces and internal spots. PVA was detected from necrotic areas but not from the non-necrotic ones. However, plants resulting from necrotic tubers were free from aerial leaf symptoms observed in grafted plants and produced non-necrotic normal tubers. A trace-back of the parental lineage of ’Shepody’ indicated that the resistance had been introgressed from the cultivar ’Bake King’. Analysis of progeny of a cross of resistant ’Shepody’ to the susceptible ’Goldrus’ indicated that this resistance is controlled by two independent dominant complementary genes in contrast to monogenic resistance reported for other potato viruses.

    Notes: Summary A series of international trials with the potato crop was conducted in eight countries representing widely differing environments. The purpose of the experiments was: (1) to develop a method for obtaining environmental indexes which measure productivity of diverse potato-growing areas, and (2) to construct performance models for individual genotypes based on the environmental indexes. Yield data of 32 genotypes obtained from a series of 13 experiments conducted in the eight countries in 1983 and 1984 were used in the study. The response pattern of the genotypes was studied by a multivariate analysis. Five genotypes were chosen as representatives for different response patterns to the environments and their data were used for calculating a series of independent indexes for each of the experimental sites based on principal component analysis. Performance models for each of the genotypes were constructed by stepwise regression analysis of yields of a genotype on the environmental indexes based on 1983 data. Yield data of 1984 experiments were used to verify the models. Satisfactory correspondence between observed and predicted yields was obtained for most of the genotypes.

    Notes: Summary The objective of this study was to investigate the response to selection for chip colour after harvest (CH), storage at 12.8°C (CR) and at 3°C (CC) in three hybrid populations. Population 1 was derived from crossing ND860-2 (cold chipper) with F58089 (regular chipper), Population 2 was obtained from crossing ND860-2 with Russette (nonchipper), and Population 3 was derived from crossing Russette with F58089. Eighty-five to ninety-six random clones for each population plus ten check cultivars were planted in 1991 at two locations in East Canada. For CH, Population 3 had the highest predicted gain. No genetic variation for this trait was detected in Population 1. The potential genetic advance by selection within Population 1, as measured by the predicted mean of the selected clones, however, was similar to the others because Population 1 has a higher mean. For CR, Populations 2 and 3 had similar expected response estimates. Population 1 had no genetic variation for CR but showed similar potential advance to Population 2 and higher than Population 3. For CC, Population 2 had the highest predicted gain. The predicted means of selected clones of Populations 1 and 2 were higher than that of Population 3. Consequently, Populations 1 and 2 had greater potential for improvement for CC than Population 3.
