Abstract The requirements and feasibility of a real-time speech-translation system as an aid for the hearing impaired are discussed. A promising method of providing such a speech-translation system involves digital processing of the output of a shorthand machine. A reporter operates the machine and a processed version of its output appears on a visual display unit. The design considerations of such a system and a simple prototype machine are described.
