Zusammenfassung Funktion und Eigenschaften des Hämoglobins stehen in enger Beziehung zur Architektur des Moleküls. Die Kenntnis der vollständigen atomaren Struktur erlaubt es, die Mechanismen des Gastransportes und der Stabilität des Hämproteins zu erklären. Die Identifizierung von Strukturvarianten hat dazu wesentlich beigetragen. In gleicher Weise sind auch die klinischen Krankheitsbilder, die durch pathologische Effekte anomaler Hämoglobine verursacht werden, einer Erklärung zugänglich.

Summary Function and properties of the human hemoglobin are closely correlated to the architecture of the molecule. The advanced knowledge of the stereochemistry permits to explain the relationships between structure, function and stability in normal and abnormal hemoglobin, as well as the pathological effects of mutations on the integrity of the red cell.
