Abstract Starting from the statistical structural model of Alemánet al. (1988), we have developed an alternative to Stone's (1970, 1973; Aziz and Settari, 1979) methods for estimating steady-state, three-phase relative permeabilities from two sets of steady-state, two-phase relative permeabilities. Our result reduces to Stone's (1970; Aziz and Settari, 1979) first method, when the steady-state, two-phase relative permeability of the intermediate-wetting phase with respect to either the wetting phase or the nonwetting phase is a linear function of the saturation of the intermediate-wetting phase. As the curvature of either of these relative permeability functions increases, the deviation of our result from Stone's (1970; Aziz and Settari, 1979) first method increases. Currently, there are no data available that are sufficiently complete to form the basis of a comparison between our result and either of the methods of Stone (1970, 1973; Aziz and Settari, 1979).
