Notes: Abstract It is ascertained that the mercury does not enter pores of some aerogels in experiments with mercury intrusion porosimeter. The curves obtained from mercury porosimeter represent the compaction of aerogels under isostatic pressure conditions. Thus, a novel area of research for the application of the mercury porosimeter emerges. The mercury porosimeter is proposed as a convenient tool to study the mechanical properties of aerogels based on the studies of the volume decrease/expansion of an aerogel sample under isostatic pressure deformation to selected pressures.
