Abstract Rheological measurements have been made on a silicon oil and a collagen system using a Ferranti-Shirley cone-plate viscometer. Marked discrepancies between the flow curves obtained for steadily increasing and then decreasing shear rates were found for both fluids. Theoretical analysis showed that corrections needed to be made to the measured flow curves to account for the influence of the inertia of the system on the measured torque and angular velocity. Using these corrections the flow curves for the Newtonian fluid collapsed onto a single curve and the hysteresis remaining for the non-Newtonian fluid can be attributed to the properties of the fluid itself.
