    Notes: A hospital-based, multicenter, case-control study has been performed in Poland covering 741 incident stomach-cancer cases (520 males and 221 females) and the same number of controls. All stomach-cancer diagnoses were evaluated for histologic type according to the Lauren criteria. Fifty-one percent were of the intestinal type, 35 percent of the diffuse type, and 8.5 percent of the mixed type. The frequency of consumption of individual food items and several food groups was analyzed and the association of various foods with stomach cancer risk was evaluated after controlling for sex, age, occupation, education, and residency. Increased consumption of sausages was related significantly to gastric cancer risk, whereas increased consumption of cheese products, nonwhite bread, vegetables, and fruit was associated with decreased risk. A particularly strong decrease in risk was associated with consumption of radishes and onions. When consumption of fruits and vegetables, sausages, nonwhite bread, and cheese were introduced simultaneously in a multivariate model, independent effects were found only for fruit and vegetables, sausages, and nonwhite bread. The use of table salt, the frequency of eating hot meals, and an irregular eating pattern were also associated with increased risk, while additional consumption of fruit between meals showed reduced risk. If a reduction in vegetable and fruit consumption took place after marriage, an increased risk for stomach cancer was found, whereas augmented consumption of these food items after marriage decreased the risk. Separate risk models were calculated for stomach cancer of the intestinal and diffuse types, but both histologic varieties showed the same pattern of associations with dietary risk factors.

    Notes: This paper shows the results of the experiment on gas dynamic transport of helium from outside through the skin to the lungs of man in conditions of changing temperature and humidity of surroundings. The apparatus includes: an elastic bag in which the whole subject can be saturated by helium; a heating and refrigerating system; a respiratory system; an introduction system to the mass spectrometer; and a mass spectrometer with an ion detector of high sensitivity. The temperature of the surroundings varied from 24°C up to 44°C and humidity varied from 50% up to 95%. The temperature of skin varied from 25°C up to 37°C. Also the temperature oscillations of the period from 1 to 3 min were generated. In effect, those oscillations corresponded with the oscillations of He concentration in the expired air. At the higher level of humidity of the surroundings, a higher concentration of helium in the expired air was observed. At 100% He concentration in the bag, the minimal He concentration in the expired air was 40 ppm and maximal 110 ppm. In the opinion of the authors the thermoregulation system in the body of the subject played a significant role in the observed process of gas transport.

    Notes: Measurements of the dissociative ionization cross-sections of CO, CO2, NO and N2O molecules for electrons from 20 up to 1000 eV were performed. Total collection of ions was achieved by using a specially constructed cycloidal mass spectrometer, an ion source without slit and a collector with large area. In that open ion source the effusion molecular beam formed by a capillary was crossed by the electron beam. Owing to such parameters of the mass spectrometer the mass discrimination effects were reduced. At the ionization of CO molecules, the ions CO+, C+, O+ and CO2+ were registered; at CO2, the ions CO2+, CO+, O+, C+ and CO22+; at NO, the ions NO+, N+, O+ and NO2+; at N2O, the ions N2O+, NO+, N2, O+, O+, (N+, N2+ 2) and N2O2+. The relative values of the partial cross-sections were normalized to the absolute total ionization cross-sections obtained by Rapp and Englander-Golden.
