Notizen: In this paper we analyse a simple but non-trivial steady-state creeping elasto visco-plastic (Maxwell fluid) radial flow problem, paying particular attention to the effects of the boundary conditions. Solutions are obtained by integration of a governing equation on stress, using the Runge-Kutta method for initial value problems and finite differences for boundary value problems. A more general approach by the finite element method, which solves for the velocity field rather than the stress field, and which is applicable to a wide range of problems, is presented and tested using the radial flow example.

Notizen: The effect of elastic strains in the steady-state visco-elastic fluid flow under the rolling process is analysed quantitatively. Spurious oscillations in the stress deviator and pressure fields are precluded and the rate of convergence is improved when the Petrov-Galerkin method, which is based on a least-square method, is introduced into the finite element equation for the constitutive law.

Notizen: The application of the penalty-function formulation of the finite element method is made possible for analysing visco-elastic fluid flows by the method which decouples the momentum and continuity equations from the constitutive equation. An upwind finite element scheme is combined with the method in order to solve the constitutive equation. As visco-elastic fluid models, Jaumann derivative, upper and lower convected derivatives are considered. The Poiseuille flow and the flow through a plane converging channel are analysed.

Notizen: A frontal-skyline method is presented which allows for compact skyline storage while using the frontal method. It is shown that the method requires the same minimum core storage as the frontal method and fewer transfers to and from disc than the blocked-skyline method. Subroutines necessary for its implementation with finite element codes are given.

Notizen: A numerical method for analysing an axisymmetric injection moulding process is presented. A consistent approximation to pressure is applied for a penalty function formulation of Galerkin's finite element method. To analyse the moving free surface and visualize the transient flow pattern, marker particles are introduced. An axisymmetric abrupt cavity, which is filled with a generalized Newtonian fluid, is solved to verify the scheme. As a practical example problem, the transient flow through moulds of a memory disc is analysed.

Notizen: A pressure-smoothing scheme for Stokes and Navier-Stokes flows of Newtonian fluids and for Stokes flow of Maxwell fluids is described. The stress deviator obtained from the calculated velocity field is substituted into the governing equilibrium equation. The resulting equation is then solved to obtain a new, smoothed pressure by a least square finite element method.

Notizen: A simple extrusion process for Newtonian and power-law fluids is analysed. Marker particles are introduced to analyse the fluid flow motions. Area co-ordinates of six-node triangular element are used to determine the marker position in the element. With this element, the solution algorithm becomes simple compared with the one using the linear triangular element. The differences in flow and swell patterns between the two fluids are described.

Notizen: The penalty function formulation of the finite element method is described for the analysis of transient incompressible creeping flows. Marker particles are utilized to represent moving free surfaces and to visualize the flow patterns. For determining the movement of markers from element to element, the area coordinate system of the linear triangular element is introduced. With the method presented, a punch indentation problem and an injection problem for an L-shaped cavity are solved for Newtonian and power-law fluids.
