Notes: Abstract Pr2O3-SiO2 xerogels doped with different Pr/Si concentrations were annealed at 900°C for 120 h and then investigated by FTIR, NIR absorption, Raman and luminescence spectroscopies. It is observed that the content of surface silanol groups is lower for higher Pr3+ concentrations. Luminescence measurements indicate that the amount of the residual OH plays an important role in the spectroscopic properties of the Pr3+ ion and in particular the quantum yield of the emission from the 3P0,1 and 1D2 states.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the dynamical processes of rare-earth photoluminescence in silica glasses produced by the sol-gel method. Generally, static spectroscopic properties are used as a tool to probe the local structure near dopants as well as for the study of glass formation. Rare earth ions are preferred structural probes, especially the Eu3+ ion for its sensitivity to local structural modifications and its spectroscopic simplicity. By an analysis of the decaying emission that follows a pulsed laser excitation, we have studied several dynamical processes. Importance of a distribution of different environments for the dopant is clearly seen even for the wet gels. The evolution of the lifetimes allow to study the densification process.

Notes: The supernatants of Vero cell cultures after infection with a herpes simplex virus or a poliomyelitis virus as well as a blank were analysed by pyrolysis/direct chemical ionization mass spectrometry (Py/DCI MS). Informative pyrogrammes were obtained and used for characterization of viral proteins by applying pattern recognition methods. Differentiation of viral proteins was evaluated by analysing ‘blind’ samples. Herpes viruses could be classified correctly but the observed differences between the blank and the polio virus supernatants were too small for reliable classification of the polio viruses. Purification of the samples seems to be a prerequisite for further studies. The potential value of Py/DCI MS as a rapid non-invasive diagnostic method for viral meningoencephalitis is stressed.

Notes: The 1H and 13C signals of the hexyl chains of the title compounds were fully assigned. The regiochemical features of the aliphatic region of proton and carbon spectra were analysed in dimers and trimers. Dimers and trimers proved to be reliable model compounds in the regiochemical assignment of poly(3-hexylthiophene) even when the aliphatic region of proton and carbon spectra was involved. The chemical shifts of the protons of CH2(α)s and of the hexyl chain as a whole and those of the first three aliphatic carbons appear to be the most significant.
