Notes: Abstract A variety of discharge sources, including glow discharges, arcs, sparks, and magnetoplasmas, provide the ability to analyze the elemental composition of (conductive) solids without requiring dissolution or other time-consuming sample preparation. The state of development of these techniques varies from nascent to well-established, and the performance is similarly diverse. The physics and chemistry of sampling of solids with plasmas is explained. The degree to which various processes occur in each technique is discussed, and the performance of each technique is related to the fundamental processes which are dominant in each. Particular attention is paid to plasma heterogeneity and space charge phenomena, which dramatically affects sampling.
