Notizen: Abstract A method is presented which combines environmental indices and estimates of inputs from various land uses to aid in environmental impact assessments. Unweighted pair/group cluster analyses are used to obtain relationships between easily observable environmental indices, such as vegetation types, soils, and geology, based on their mutual recurrence. These relationships are shown by using an ordination technique which shows the nature of complex impacts on a natural system. Results are used to develop anenvironmental effects sequence diagram based on known scientific and engineering principles and observed natural relationships. The diagram may be used in conjunction with land use data to estimate the possible magnitude of impacts on the pre-existing system which may result from such land use. Several examples are developed which quantify inputs from various land uses and which compare them with environmental inputs including point source and non-point source liquid and atmospheric emmissions, land modifications, and resource consumption. Known average values are used and a separate comparison is made in describing the vast differences between the project phases of construction versus longterm operation. A hypothetical environmental impact assessment is given for a small residential development in Chambers County, Texas, U.S. of A.

Notizen: Summary In field studies carried out at Cuyo-Cuyo, southern Peru, an area of traditional agriculture, the varietal and ploidy richness of two potato fields cultivated by the Quechua Indians was determined. Tetraploid primitive varieties were the most common, representing 95% of all plants sampled, but diploids and triploids were also found. The tuber crops agricultural system on the Incaic terraces was documented, and factors affecting the selection of potato varieties were assessed. Flavour and dry matter content were the most important quality factors indicated by local farmers.

Notizen: Summary The formation of triploids in 4x×2x crosses was studied in primitive potato varieties from the Andes of Peru and Bolivia. Triploid frequencies were as high as 80–100% in some crosses, although the actual number of seeds was low. The ‘triploid block’ varied according to the tetraploid parent, and was never entirely absent. The likelihood of triploid formation was studied in 4x×2x crosses where pollen from both tetraploids and diploids of known genotype was used. Even though the diploids were chosen for their non-production of 2n gametes, as detected in pollen grain size, 66% of the hybrids were tetraploid. The amount and probability of gene-flow between the tetraploid and diploid gene-pools, either directly through 2n gametes or through ‘triploid bridges’ was examined. Most of the 20 cultivars of S. x chaucha produced seed in crosses with tetraploids and diploids, although the fertility of the latter crosses was four times higher. The female fertility of some of the triploids thus allows them to exchange genes with the tetraploids and diploids, although gene-flow occurs more rapidly through direct transfer from diploids to tetraploids via 2n gametes.

Notizen: The changes in solvent resistance and solution viscosity of polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol after heating with dicumyl peroxide at 140°C. are consistent with crosslinking of the former and degradation of the latter. Analytical work showed that in both cases all of the peroxide decomposed could be accounted for acetophenone and cumyl alcohol. In the case of polyethylene glycol, crosslinking results from abstraction of secondary hydrogen atoms and dimerization of the resulting radicals; in the case of polypropylene glycol abstraction of tertiary hydrogen atoms leads to radicals which break down by scission at a C—O bond to give a ketone and a more stable radical. This latter process proceeds with an efficiency of unity.
