Abstract Methane (CH4) emission from eight cultivars planted under uniform field conditions was measured by the closed static chamber method. Mean daily CH4 emission and seasonally integrated CH4 flux followed similar trends among the different varieties, irrespective of growth duration. The CH4 flux (g CH4 m−2) among the varieties was in the order of Dasanbyeo (36.9) 〈 Ilpumbyeo (42.9) 〈 Gyehwabyeo (47.8) 〈 Daeanbyeo (50.9) 〈 Dongjinbyeo (58.8) 〈 Hwaseongbyeo (59.7) 〈 Odaebyeo (62.9) 〈 Mangeumbyeo (76.0). No significant correlation was observed between CH4 emission factor and root distribution in the 0–5 cm soil profile and dry matter weight in the canopy at heading stage.
