Notes: Abstract The chemical composition of groundwater in springs is included in the program for monitoring of acidification in the province of Göteborg and Bohus, SW Sweden. Thirteen springs were selected for regular analysis approximately 3–4 times per year. They were chosen from a total amount of 34 springs previously investigated. Several factors connected to the character of the recharge area and spring site were used to select the most appropriate springs. The grain-size composition and characteristics of the Quaternary sediments determine the aquifer conditions and reflect the acid sensitivity of the groundwater. Thus, field classification of various sediments has been used as a major criterion for the selection of suitable springs for intensive monitoring. Geographical representativity, as well as results from annual chemical analyses between 1990 and 1994, has been considered.
