Notizen: Abstract C70 single crystals, free from solvent contamination, were grown via vapor phase transport technique. The (0001) face of the C70 crystal was imaged with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under ambient atmosphere. Low-resolution images of a freshly prepared crystal revealed well-ordered faceted regions with multiple terraces extending over a region of several hundred square nanometers. The terraced structure in the images indicates that the crystals formed as a layer growth. In the high-resolution images, C70 molecules were resolved in a hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure with an average center-to-center distance of 10.5±0.5 Å. After one month's exposure to the ambient atmosphere, the molecules rearranged into a mixed structure consisting of hcp and face centered cubic (fcc) regions.

Notizen: Abstract The topographic and electronic properties of the surfaces of (001) and (110) oriented YBa2Cu3Oy, epitaxial films have been probed by atomic resolution STM/STS at 4.2 K. The STM image on the (001) surface clearly revealed the atomic corrugation of the tetragonal lattice with an average spacing of 0.4 nm. while on the (110) surface the orthorhombic atomic lattice, corresponding to the Cu atoms of both CuO2 and CuO chain planes, was observed. The STS result on the (001) surface indicated the semiconducting nature of the terminating layer. As the tunneling tip came closer to the surface, however, the shape of the tunneling spectrum became more metallic and showed a superconducting energy gap, which seems to arise from the underlying superconducting layer. On the other hand, the tunneling spectra on the (110) surface indicated superconducting gap structures, independent of the tip-sample distance.

Notizen: Abstract We have measured the sample length change of HTSC single crystals in the superconducting state in a magnetic field. The magnetic field was applied parallel to the crystallinec-axis direction and was swept at a constant rate of 10 mT/s up to 6 T. The sample length change was measured along theab-plane direction, i.e., perpendicular to the field. We have found for the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals that the relative sample length change (ΔL/L) is extraordinarily large for a superconductor, on the order of 10−4. For the case of (La1−x Sr x )2CuO4, the amount of magnetostriction was not as large as for the Bi system, but the magnetostriction curves had many similarities. For both compounds, a relaxation phenomenon was observed when the field sweep was suspended at a certain field value. These observations are discussed in relation to flux line pinning.
