Notes: Commercial Y2O3 powders were subjected to high energy ball milling in a planetaryball mill using high purity alumina balls and vial. The refined Y2O3 power ,withcommercial high-purity Al2O3, Cr2O3 and Yb2O3 powders, were used as rawmaterials. Transparent ytterbium and chromium codoped yttrium aluminum garnet(Yb,Cr:YAG) ceramics were fabricated by a solid-state reaction method. TheYb,Cr:YAG ceramics exhibit a pore free structure and the average grain size is about10 micron. The strong absorptions at 940 and 968 nm of Yb3+ are suitable for InGaAsdiode laser pumping, and there is an absorption band at 1030 nm, which is suitable forpassive Q-switch laser output at 1030 nm. Transparent Yb,Cr:YAG ceramics may be apotential material for compact, efficient, high-stability diode-laser-pumped passiveQ-switched solid-state lasers

Notes: By means of a finite element method model, the effects of property parameters of refractory onthermal stress of injection lance have been studied. The results show that the maximum thermal stressincreases with the improvement of thermal conductivity and elastic modulus of refractory, while itdecreases at first and then increases with the improvement of the coefficient of expansion of refractory

Notes: The progress on the combustion synthesis of Si3N4 powders during the past decades wassummarized with the emphasis on the recently developed mechano-chemically activated combustionsynthesis (MACS) method. The effects of processing parameters such as the addition of diluent andammonium salts into the green mixtures, the variation of nitrogen pressure as well as the mechanicalactivation treatment on the degree of Si to α-Si3N4 conversion was evaluated. The combination ofmechanical activation and chemical stimulation was effective in enhancing the reactivity of Si powderreactants, which was responsible for the extension of the minimum nitrogen pressure normally requiredfor the combustion synthesis of Si3N4. This breakthrough indicates that nitriding combustion of silicon inpressurized nitrogen could be promoted by activating the solid reactants instead of by increasing thepre-exerted nitrogen pressure. The MACS process was successfully applied to the industrial production ofSi3N4 powders, the regularities for the large-scale synthesis were reported, and the as-synthesized Si3N4powder products were systematically characterized

Notes: Particle’s behavior in the slurry with power-law viscosity shows great effect on the wafersurface polishing. Hydrodynamic pressure is periodically generated on the surface asperity whenparticles are passing through it. Fatigue fracture occurs under the effect of periodical pressure and itbegins from the top to the bottom of the asperity. Based on the energy-balance fracture theory, theremoval rate is calculated and it shows good agreement with experiment data

Notes: In order to discover the typical process route (TPR) in the Computer Aided ProcessPlanning (CAPP) database, Hierarchical Clustering algorithm is adopted. A mathematics modelbased on the data matrix was built to describe the process route (PR). On the base of the operationcode, the distance between operations, between the PRs, between clusters were measured toevaluate the PR similarity. Then, the PR clusters were eventually merged by the hierarchicalclustering algorithm. Three methods are listed to confirm the clustering granularity that determinesthe clustering result. This TPR discovery method is successfully applied to discover the axlesleeves’ TPR

Notes: We report on the 288 V-10 V DC- DC converter circuit using AlGaN/GaN HFETs forthe first time. The AlGaN/GaN HFET with a large current and a high breakdown voltage operationwas fabricated. That is, the maximum drain current was over 50 A, and the minimum on-resistancewas 70 mohm. The breakdown voltage was over 600 V. A DC-DC down-converter from input DC288 V to output DC 10 V was fabricated using these HFETs. It was confirmed that the switchingspeed of the AlGaN/GaN HFET was faster than that of Si MOSFET. The DC-DC down-converterwas fabricated using these HFETs. This converter was composed of a full bridge circuit using fourn-channel AlGaN/GaN HFETs. In the case of AlGaN/GaN HFET, a gate switching wave (Vgs) andsource-drain wave (Vds) were abrupt compared with those of using Si MOSFETs. In both cases, astable and constant output DC 10V was also obtained and the conversion efficiency of theconverters with AlGaN/GaN HFETs was 84%

Notes: The dark traces induced by high-power laser radiation in LiNbO3:Mg and LiNbO3:Zn are found to be reduced by annealing the crystals in an O2 atmosphere. Most of the decrease of the second-harmonic generation efficiency η for 1064–532 nm conversion due to dark traces can be recovered in heat-treated crystals. The transmission loss spectra ΔT(λ) of dark traces show a complex absorption band ranging from 365 nm to near infrared, which can be decomposed into three main peaks at 3.1, 2.5, and 1.6 eV. Maximum transmission loss due to dark traces after 1200 shots with an input power density of 18 MW/cm2 is 17% and 25% for as-grown LiNbO3:Zn and LiNbO3:Mg crystals respectively, and it is reduced to 4.6% and 3.8% respectively for heat-treated crystals. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We used human neural stem cells (hNSCs) and their differentiated cultures as a model system to evaluate the mechanism(s) involved in rotenone (RO)- and camptothecin (CA)-induced cytotoxicity. Results from ultrastructural damage and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining indicated that RO-induced cytotoxicity resembled CA-induced apoptosis more than H2O2-induced necrosis. However, unlike CA-induced, caspase 9/3-dependent apoptosis, there was no increased activity in caspase 9, caspase 3 or poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage in RO-induced cytotoxicity, in spite of time-dependent release of cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) following mitochondrial membrane depolarization and a significant increase in reactive oxygen species generation. Equal doses of RO and CA used in hNSCs induced caspase 9/3-dependent apoptosis in differentiated cultures. Time-dependent ATP depletion occurred earlier and to a greater extent in RO-treated hNSCs than in CA-treated hNSCs, or differentiated cultures treated with RO or CA. In conclusion, these results represent a unique ultrastructural and molecular characterization of RO- and CA-induced cytotoxicity in hNSCs and their differentiated cultures. Intracellular ATP levels may play an important role in determining whether neural progenitors or their differentiated cells follow a caspase 9/3-dependent or -independent pathway in response to acute insults from neuronal toxicants.

Notes: Human neural precursor cells grown in culture provide a source of tissue for drug screening, developmental studies and cell therapy. However, mechanisms underlying their growth and differentiation are poorly understood. We show that epidermal growth factor (EGF) responsive precursors derived from the developing human cortex undergo senescence after 30–40 population doublings. Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) increased overall expansion rates, prevented senescence and allowed the growth of a long-term self renewing neural stem cell (ltNSCctx) for up to 110 population doublings. We established basal gene expression in ltNSCctx using Affymetrix oligonucleotide microarrays that delineated specific members of important growth factor and signaling families consistently expressed across three separate lines. Following LIF withdrawal, 200 genes showed significant decreases. Protein analysis confirmed LIF-regulated expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein, CD44, and major histocompatibility complex I. This study provides the first molecular profile of human ltNSCctx cultures capable of long-term self renewal, and reveals specific sets of genes that are directly or indirectly regulated by LIF.
