Notizen: Numerical solutions for laminar flow past an enclosed and open backward-facing step are presented. The semi-implicit method for pressure equations (SIMPLE) methodology is used with finite volume discretization. The investigation concentrated on the differences in the lower reattachment length which are caused by the upper boundary layer. The upper boundary layer can cause three major effects; flow retardation, inhibition of perpendicular streamlines, and an upper recirculation region. These all affect the lower reattachment length. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Particle-laden flows are calculated for a classical laminar backward- facing step problem. The particle tracks are calculated using a recently developed exponential Lagrangian tracking scheme. The behaviour of the particle-laden flow is considered for various inlet for Reynolds number, Stokes numbers and void fractions. Doping the flow with low-Stokes-number particles has the effect of increasing the inlet inertia of the flow and this increases the strength of the recirculation behind the step. High-Stokes- number particles are dominated by gravitational effects which affect the flow accordingly. Differences between the single-phase flow and the particle-laden flows are therefore dependent on the Stokes number and increase linearly with void fraction.

Notizen: The study investigates the entrance effect for flow over a backward-facing step by comparing predictions that set the inlet boundary at various locations upstream of the sudden expansion. Differences are most significant in the sudden expansion region. If the geometry has an inlet channel, then shorter reattachment and separation lengths are predicted. Comparisons with experimental data indicate that better agreement is found using a long inlet channel, but only for low Reynolds numbers where the experimental error is less significant. For certain cases, predictions with a high expansion number are perturbed by the entrance effect more than low-expansion-number predictions; however, the effect is localized in the sudden expansion region. Channels with low expansion numbers always experience a greater entrance effect after some distance upstream and downstream of the sudden expansion. The boundary layer growth in the inlet channel was examined using a uniform inlet velocity profile. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Numerical solutions using the SIMPLE algorithms for laminar flow over a backward-facing step are presented. Five differencing schemes were used: hybrid; quadratic upwind (QUICK); second-order upwind (SOUD); central-differencing and a novel scheme named second-order upwind biased (SOUBD). The SOUBD scheme is shown to be part of a family of schemes which include the central-differencing, SOUD and QUICK schemes for uniform grids. The results of the backward-facing step problem are presented and are compared with other numerical solutions and experimental data to evaluate the accuracy of the differencing schemes. The accuracy of the differencing schemes was ascertained by using uniform grids of various grid densities. The QUICK, SOUBD and SOUD schemes gave very similar accurate results. The hybrid scheme suffered from excessive diffusion except for the finest grids and the central-differencing scheme only converged for the finest grids.

Notizen: Various pressure-based schemes are proposed for transient flows based on well-established SIMPLE and PISO algorithms. The schemes are applied to the solution of unsteady laminar flow around a square cylinder and steady laminar flow over a backward-facing step. The implicit treatment and the performance of the various schemes are evaluated by using benchmark solutions with a small time step. Three different second-order-accurate time derivatives based on different time levels are presented. The different time derivatives are applied to the various schemes under consideration. Overall the PISO scheme was found to predict accurate results and was robust. However, for small time step values, alternative schemes can predict accurate results for approximately half the computational cost. The choice of time derivative proved to be very significant in terms of the accuracy and robustness of a scheme. Significantly, the one-sided forward differencing scheme was the most successful used in conjunction with a strongly implicit-based algorithm. However, a greater degree of accuracy was achieved using the standard PISO algorithm with the Crank-Nicolson time derivative. Recommendations for future work are discussed.© 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A new scheme which can solve unsteady incompressible flows is described in this paper. The scheme is a variant of the SIMPLE methodology. Typically, a scheme of this type tends to suffer from stability problems, which this new scheme overcomes by taking small intermediate steps within a time step. The calculations made in the intermediate steps are damped to enhance the stability of the scheme. The new stabilised scheme is evaluated for laminar flow around a square cylinder, impulsively started laminar flow over a backward-facing step and fluctuating laminar flow over a backward-facing step. Comparisons are made with other numerical predictions and experimental data. In general, good agreement is found, except for the fluctuating laminar flow over a backward-facing step problem. The new scheme is found to have the same level of accuracy, stability and efficiency in comparison with the PISO scheme, but it is easier to code. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
