Notizen: Summary The theory of viscoplasticity based on total strain and overstress is used in order to simulate the sensitivity to the rate of loading of two commonly used stainless steels, namely AISI 316L and 316H. The consitutive model has been implemented within a transient finite element computer code using a stress update algorithm based on the elastic predictor-return mapping concept. Both monotonic and cyclic loading conditions are considered in one or more space dimensions. Experimental results showing strain-rate dependence at room temperature are reported for both types of steel and used for calibrating the viscoplastic numerical model. An explicit dependence of the nonlinear viscosity function on the strain rate has been obtained and the calibrated model is found to yield results which are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Finally the calibrated viscoplastic model is applied to predict the response of two representative structures subjected to impulsive loading. The results indicate a significant effect of the rate of loading on the internal stress distribution.

Notizen: A simple method is proposed to generate high-order accurate convection operators for lumped-explicit schemes based on linear or multilinear finite elements. The basic idea is to reduce the truncation error on the first-order spatial derivatives by exploiting the consistent mass matrix of the finite element method in a purely explicit multistep procedure. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on pure convection problems in one and two dimensions.

Notizen: This paper discusses three numerical integration schemes connected with a finite element solution to the transient heat-conduction equation. The main emphasis is on the achievable accuracy. A simple recurrence relation derived from the Galerkin process is suggested for the treatment of fast-varying boundary conditions as being significantly better than the usual Crank-Nicholson scheme in matters of short-time accuracy.

Notizen: This paper describes a method of solving electromagnetic induction problems by means of the finite element technique. A variational equation associated with the differential equation for the vector potential is formulated and solved via the concept of finite elements. Sinusoidal driving currents and linear, isotropic, but inhomogeneous media are assumed. A typical example is included in order to illustrate the suggested solution technique.
