Notizen: A system of three Josephson junctions driven by a direct current is modelled and studied both numerically and with a perturbative approach. The results are compared and the relation with experiment is discussed. Hysteretic behavior is observed and predicted with the perturbation. Chaotic behavior is also observed and analyzed. Extensions of the approach to other models is discussed.

Notizen: A versatile small-angle x-ray diffraction/scattering system has been developed at Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory for studies of biological and other materials. The system includes two sets of collimation slits separated by an ionization chamber, a sample holder cooled by a circulation bath, a vacuum/He scattering path after the sample holder and a detector, either a linear one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counter or a position-sensitive quadrant detector. Data aquisition is controlled by a VAXstation through a CAMAC interface. Menu-driven data acquisition and on-line analysis software has been developed. The system can be used to collect small- to intermediate-angle x-ray scattering and diffraction data. Monochromatic, anomalous, and time-resolved diffraction/scattering experiments are possible. A time-resolved spectrophotometer using photodiode arrays has also been developed for simultaneous measurements of optical absorption spectra and x-ray scattering/diffraction.

Notizen: We consider a lattice model of a semiflexible homopolymer chain in a bad solvent. Beside the temperature T, this model is described by (i) a curvature energy εh, representing the stiffness of the chain; (ii) a nearest-neighbor attractive energy εv, representing the solvent; and (iii) the monomer density ρ=N/Ω, where N and Ω denote, respectively, the number of monomers and the number of lattice sites. This model is a simplified view of the protein folding problem, which encompasses the geometrical competition between secondary structures (the curvature term modelling helix formation) and the global compactness (modeled here by the attractive energy), but contains no side chain information. By allowing the monomer density ρ to depart from unity one has made a first (albeit naive) step to include the role of the water. In previous analytical studies, we considered only the (fully compact) case ρ=1, and found a first order freezing transition towards a crystalline ground state (also called the native state in the protein literature). In this paper, we extend this calculation to the description of both compact and noncompact phases. The analysis is done first at a mean-field level. We then find that the transition from the high temperature swollen coil state to the crystalline ground state is a two-step process for which (i) there is first a θ collapse transition towards a compact "liquid'' globule, and (ii) at low temperature, this "liquid'' globule undergoes a discontinuous freezing transition. The mean-field value of the θ collapse temperature is found to be independent of the curvature energy εh. This mean-field analysis is improved by a variational bound, which confirms the independence of the θ collapse temperature with respect to εh. This result is confirmed by a Monte Carlo simulation, although with a much lower value of the θ temperature. This lowering of the collapse transition allows the possibility (for large εh) of a direct first order freezing transition, from a swollen coil to the crystalline ground state. For small values of εh, the mean-field two-step mechanism remains valid. In the protein folding problem, the "liquid'' compact phase is likely to be related to the "molten globule'' phase. The properties of this model system thus suggest that, even though side chain disordering is not taken into account, disordering of the backbone of a protein may still be a sufficient mechanism to drive the system from the native state into the molten globule state. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In solution small-angle X-ray scattering data, the lowest-angle region is affected by interparticle correlations and potentially provides information concerning particle-particle interactions in solution, such as overall electrostatic interaction– attractive or repulsive – and tendency to form aggregates. A method is presented, based on a Monte Carlo approach, to calculate the interparticle interference for a solution of particles of arbitrary shape interacting through a simple two-particle hard-core potential. The method provides a basis for a quantitative analysis of the concentration-dependent scattering in the low-angle region. It has been used to study the relative effects of interparticle interference and particle dimerization in the scattering profiles for the proteins troponin C and lysozyme. The calculation may be generalized to include a more physically realistic potential.

Notizen: The use of synchrotron radiation in the soft and hard X-ray spectral region received major impetus with the start of parasitic operation of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Project (SSRP) in 1974. This was the first time that synchrotron radiation from a multi-GeV electron storage ring was made available in a user facility for studying the structure of matter. Here we review the early work at SSRP as well as the activities that preceded it, highlighting the scientific accomplishments (soft X-ray photoemission, EXAFS, protein crystallography), beamline instrumentation developments and source improvements. The early work using bending-magnet radiation led to the funding of several dedicated facilities in the US and elsewhere in the world – the so-called second-generation light sources. Early work with wiggler and undulator insertion devices led to funding of third-generation sources better optimized for insertion device sources, particularly undulators.
